Damn I hate the non-collaboration between HŽPP and SŽ

Both now have online ticketing

But only to the last station in their respective territories

So neither of them can sell Ilirkska Bistrica - Šapjane (line Pivka-Rijeka) or Rakitovec - Buzet (line Divača-Pula) - in both cases just a few km at the border 😡

Simple solution: include the first station in the neighbouring country in the national ticketing system…

SŽ can sell me a ticket only to Ilistrika Bistrica

@jon Why not just walk across the border?

(I jest, of course!)

This line is really easy to re-activate. Most of the track is active, you only really need to sort out this bridge at the edge of Coevorden

@jon will there be enough demand, though? It is a connection through a sparsely populated area.

@jon Bentheimer Eisenbahn has looked (is still looking?) into this. They could run it on the cheap with one train set, provided they can arrive and turn in Coevorden in time. Major infra upgrades are necessary to get there, including improving line speed and modifying level crossings. So, yes, doable, but it requires a considerable investment.

@jon I had totally missed the original toot, sorry. Other than that, I now see that this is indeed a viable project. It is not that much of an investment to make it work.

@jon True, though there is talk about building Veendam - Stadskanaal - Emmen. This would link Coevorden directly to Groningen, which would make a difference. Veendam to Stadskanaal already has tracks, but in disrepair.

Urban, regional, transport planning... in fact, all planning needs to deal with the complexities of time and process. Complex socio-spatial systems evolve and transform in ways that are sometimes predictable, and sometimes not; sometimes slow, and other times fast. Planners are at the frontline of all this, and yet, how well do they understand time? Does this spark your interest? Departing Montbard for Paris this morning. Then onwards to Bruxelles. Not a regular thread today - I’m going to - I’ll post using that tag

@jon It doesn't list one of the main issues, namely infrastructure providers discriminating against TOC's other than their national ones. Some countries are really good at being restrictive (looking at you, France). It is not just that airplanes are too cheap (they are!) but also that it is just insanely complicated to set things up administratively. The railway sector is really good at running self-defeating systems.

lasse,
@lasse@mstdn.science avatar

@jon True, that. But I suspect it will be easier to get that fixed than getting national systems aligned. Time will tell. I'm all for better night train connections.

lasse,
@lasse@mstdn.science avatar

@jon I know, I've seen the same (from the inside, even). Still, I try to be optimistic. I was also in doubt about the question if a small company like European Sleeper would make it work, but they have managed (so far). And yes, more and better rolling stock is absolutely necessary.

lasse,
@lasse@mstdn.science avatar

@jon (full disclosure, I bought into European Sleeper - it is an interesting experiment)

OK, mixed news today

Plans for the week messed up by the rail strike, but it happens

But the good news is crowd funding for South East Europe May-June can start this week 💪

And tomorrow I am going to cycle paradise Netherlands, and Wednesday have a load of interesting meetings about rail and cycle advocacy. So I can live with the consequences of the strike :-)

lasse,
@lasse@mstdn.science avatar

@jon will you be in Rotterdam on the 28th for the public debate about European railways?

Question: would it be fine to email a research project leader, express my interest in applying for a postdoc they offer, and ask if they have advice regarding application materials, like the cover letter? 😅

@academicchatter

lasse,
@lasse@mstdn.science avatar

@ninokadic @academicchatter yes, absolutely. This helps syncing expectations. I always encourage applicants to get in touch.
