It seems the mod of that community did use the ‘t*rd’ suffix and that is, without question, ableism. As, I said elsewhere, I don’t know why people who say they are progressive/leftist feel this is an acceptable suffix to use when I’m sure they wouldn’t use a slur of the same severity against trans people or queer people or people of a race different from theirs.
There does seem to be a general feeling across the entire political spectrum that that suffix is still OK to use, possibly because they see people who have a learning based disability as less than human?
It’s not OK to use. It ridicules and dehumanises people. I really hope if nothing else comes out of this that people in general, and that mod/community in particular, learn a little bit about disability issues and to start putting that suffix in the same bin they put all the trans/queer/black/asian/jewish slurs they no doubt loathe.
Disappointing that people use that suffix, or complete word. It is ableism in every way. I’m really not sure why people who consider themselves progressive or left-aligned feel that is still an OK suffix/word to use unless they feel that the people that word abuses are of no worth or worth no consideration.
I just recently found out about Firefish, I know is a microblogging base like Mastodon and Twitter, but I want to know more about Firefish, which is better?? I want to know your opinion about both platforms
Firefish is much more customisable, both for users and from an Admin point of view. For example, I like that as an Admin I can upload a bunch of emojis that have particular meaning to the instance theme. I can also create a site wide theme (but users can change that if they want to). I can follow people and interact with people on any microblogging service that runs activitypub (so Mastodon etc). I found installing Firefish very easy, using their ubuntu installer .sh file.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Mastodon, its great software. I just find firefish more versatile.
I’m pretty new to this instance, having moved from .world recently. I haven’t interacted with anyone from hexbear yet but I’ve seen some of their members behaviour on other instances and followed threads back to that instance.
They seem to have a self fulfilling persecution complex centred around their political opinions. I see them on their own instance saying things like ‘any instance that doesn’t believe the exact, very narrowly defined ideology that we do are stupid and they hate what we stand for’, then they go onto the other instances and make even the most innocent posts that have nothing to do with politics into commentary on their ideology. It’s like they can’t see the world in any other way, or respect that others might. Then, when they get banned, they head back to their instance and say ‘see? they’re just intolerant boot lickers’. It often feels like they’re trying to get banned, or their instance defederated simply so they can happily confirm to each other their belief that everyone is out to get them.
It can get pretty mentally exhausting seeing people say something utterly innocuous like ‘I like chips’ and then a bunch of hexbear users launch into a long winded political sub-thread on what a dick you are for liking NATO-loving, liberal, colonialist chips.
They are trans and lgbtq+ allies and that’s a good thing. I’m just not sure that that one aspect of their makeup drowns out all the baggage that comes with it. I always feel it comes with conditions attached - we’ll be your allies as long as we can flood your instance. I have no doubt that if this instance were to defed with them, their allyship would no longer extend to blahaj members.

Filen is really good. It’s had teething problems but they are getting smoothed out. All their apps are open source (the Android app can be installed direct from GitHub via Obtanium if you don’t want to use G Play) and nothing leaves your device(s) without being encrypted. They have a free tier too if you just want to try it out before committing.

I just joined and yeah I’m getting this too. Can’t upload a profile avatar for me or for my community.
Just FYI: here’s the error for trying to upload a user and community profile pic: {“data”:{“msg”:“Required command magick not found, make sure it exists in pict-rs’ $PATH”,“files”:null},“state”:“success”}
Slightly different error when trying to upload a banner image for my community: {“data”:{“error”:“rate_limit_error”},“state”:“success”}

Hello Blahaj users,...
Both of these removals are tacit endorsement of ableism and racism and this mod should be removed. (hexbear.net)
