I have a theory that people who dislike the caps attached to bottles, actually don't push the cap away far enough to click into resting position on the side, causing it to press against their face when they try drink from the bottle.

I don't see any other reason to dislike them anyway, if you use them properly they don't get in the way, it means you never have to look for or place the cap anywhere while pouring, you can't lose the cap, it means you can drink with one hand while e.g biking, etc🤷

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy It depends on the manufacturer and the option they picked for it. Some never took drinking straight up into account, some don't have any click or it's weak and pops out continuously. I hate these things and that we use more, not less, plastic to produce these bullshit caps.

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy I read an article about a bottle cap manufacturer that sadly, yes it is more plastic. The EU thought of everything so it needs to be strong enough to withstand 5N of force to prevent people ripping it off or something.

The less littering is an urban myth IMO. People will just en mass rip the cap off and plastic hardly gets recycled anyway. Have you ever seen anyone, for real, throw away a bottle cap!? Let alone in a country with a bottle deposit system.

The people who worked on this could have spent time on something more impactful that doesn't alienate people. Like making sure we have proper bottle deposit systems everywhere, and changing cultural views on recycling and reuse.

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy I have never seen such a thing. Why would you even? You have the cap right there and without it your bag and everything gets gross with sticky residue. I find it very hard to believe this is a wide spread problem, let alone any measure makes any significant differences.

@anthropy The beach, sorry but no measurements are going to change anything there... And most of these can be from anywhere in the world and from years ago.

Let's agree to disagree. I think this is just EU bureaucratic showmanship that has no real, and perhaps even negative, impact whilst annoying most people. They'd have spent their time better addressing more useful policies.

I am seeing a lot of new drama about Telegram and a new contender Signal... But what is the advantage of yet another new messaging app, which after installing just seems completely empty? We had more secure ways of communicating when needed already that are more widely used? I am not really sure why we need this one or what Telegram did this time.

anthropy, to random
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

wouldn't it be neat if at least some percentage of people who are going to migrate away from telegram, migrate to open decentralized protocols like matrix?

like honestly I know some people like to hate on matrix's end to end encryption and it being too easy to lose your key, but I think it's honestly one of the if not the best solution to the problem, and it also allows you to keep in touch with your friends on other networks through 'bridges'; technically you only need one protocol for all IMs

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy For the average users? Absolutely not, that's way too much steps to ever get traction. Most people just want to open the app, instantly find the people they want to chat with and start chatting. It doesn't need to be secure, it shouldn't have any usernames or additional security except "block". It's why WhatsApp and Telegram work.

The only change we had to replace that was RCS as a successor to SMS, but it came too late, wasn't opened up quickly (for free) enough and is missing features people now expect.

idea: force datacenters and large industries to have a direct green energy supply if they want to operate at all. no green energy, available? turn off until it's back or set up some batteries. Having your own solar farms or wind turbines onsite to offset power usage is fine. Operate datacenters/steel plants/etcetc only when the sun shines or the wind blows or something alike. Only a little energy available? I guess no ML training today! Big overload of green energy nobody's taking? Go ham!

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy Doesn't the spot price market for energy already provide incentive to shift loads they can? I make use of hours with negative energy prices to run all my heavy household appliances, for computation you could also try to do that

I am dearly afraid of what happens if WebAssembly actually takes off.

Yes it's a great tech; streaming applications, 3D stuff with low overhead, all that sweet stuff

Now imagine building an adblocker, or injecting user CSS, or making a screenreader, or looking at the source code for a website, or using firefox's 'reader view' or literally whatever for WebASM

WebASM is literally just flash/java/whatever all over again. Please, do not create frontends in it, apps are fine, but not frontends 😭

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy I see it as finally bridging the gap between traditional programming and whatever we have been doing before. The frontend will always remain through the DOM and I don't see frontend peeps changing that.

But some advanced things, yes. It may be what flash was used for, e.g. a game. Did you expect those on your reader view? Not really in the same realm. But imagine, you can even get an emulator for example.

Source code you are right, you can't view it. But honestly, this is the case with every binary running on your computer too. And that JS might also be minified and not licensed openly to you.

I find it conceptually interesting that some people get upset when LLMs are 'censored'.

Are LLMs an entity of their own deserving free speech, or an extension of the company that operates them?

Because 'censoring' is just a temporary measure, in the long term they'll try to take out these things as part of the training anyway, which again begs the question, are they entities of their own deserving to have freeform 'opinions' on things or extensions of the companies that built and trained them?

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy They are just a database with an advanced regurgitator, like the next evolution search engine. They don't have a will, free speech, etc. And just like search engines are censored, they are as well.

The biggest question is just that, do we want to censor information from people and to what extent? We currently over-censor things I feel.

Looks like we were massively ripped off by our energy company and they're about to make it a lot worse this year. Our energy bill might double because we have solar panels... I need to now figure out which energy company wouldn't rip us off like this, but it's super hard...

On our way to Hamburg, mid way stop to NFC. ^_^ Long train journey in two legs with a small city trip in between instead of flying for the way there. :)

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@evi Thanks! Always good try and travel more green!

I also look forward to seeing Hamburg and enjoying some good food. :) I am familiar with Hanseatic cities in the Netherlands, coming from around that area, and they're really pretty. Hamburg is quite a different league though as one of the capitals of the Hanze :)

Darnit, none of my larger frying pans and most of my cooking pots work with my induction hob. Sigh.

Anyone want some free pans? I'm happy to donate these to someone that still uses gas/electric/other methods of heating.

Brands include AMC (most of the cooking pots), Fissler, Lumenflon, and RoyalVKB.

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy The cooking pots I can understand, they should last forever. But how old are your frying pans that they aren't compatible with induction? o.O If these are 'non-stick' you will notice fairly soon you should have replaced them quite a while ago. Also health wise if this is teflon...

Does anyone here have a program or app the recommend to make a network diagram (layout of switches, routers, patch panel, etc)? I tried diagrams.net and lucid and they both make me cranky. I am looking for something for my home setup where I can make the difference between fiber, utp and poe very clear and not have to manually click every connection 6+ times and routing is at least semi-sane.

@evi You should have picked Mikrotik! How dare you pick Mikrotik inste... Oh... 😁

I really do like my little router and I am very satisfied with RouterOS. :) Only their WiFi offerings were still a bit lagging behind on standards when I checked so I kept my OpenWRT.

@evi Quite a more extensive setup vs my little 5-port dingy, nice :D

Does anyone know of an opensource Deck app that actually works?

I happily used the Nextcloud Deck app from the Fdroid store for a while, but at some point the devs introduced multithreading in the initial sync, and it has simply never worked since then, not on any phone I tried it on, including the version from the Play store on an unmodified Pixel phone, so I can only assume it hasn't worked for quite a lot of people in quite a while now.

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy That is strange? My yubikey works fine

maruno,
@maruno@bark.lgbt avatar

@anthropy Oh, ok you used a third party build without system libraries. It normally used the system provided support for this.
