Middle aged white guy trying to become less ignorant over time. I build websites the "traditional" way.

I’ve been building websites for ~20yrs. Progressive Enhancement, HTML/CSS/JS, and accessible practices will always be core to quality work. Frameworks come and go.

Hayfever has come for me this week, and with a vengence.

Stop jizzing in the air you bastard plants. I want to breath, and not sneeze out a lung or scratch my eyes out.

It is 5:30pm and our hero stands in his kitchen, staring at the draining board, onto which this morning he placed a bag of frozen chicken breasts to defrost.

The draining board is holding a half frozen bag of chicken breasts.

"Ah, British summer" he says with meloncholie.

Good. The world needs a revolution of compassionate liberal leadership.

Those leaders though also need to remember that their position needs actively defending and the right actively suppressing. “The only thing a tolerant world can not tolerate is intolerance”. It’s old and true. You have to fight for liberal power. It does not survive by its principles alone. Just as tolerance does not survive if you try to tolerate the intolerant.

Enforce a social contract. https://masto.ai/@Nonilex/112552974467448755

We were going to use a sample of a hellfire preacher in one of our songs but then thought twice about copyright issues. Then I was volunteered to recreate the sermon myself. Here's a clip. "Enjoy".

Just a tip to UI designers; the tab that has higher contrast is the one in the foreground.

So don't design an "active tab" that has less contrast than the "inacitve tab". It's especially obviously wrong when there are only two tabs.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@fabian The tab and its text.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@fabian Now only have two tabs and ditch the border left

Almost all the ads I see on YouTube’s “pretending to be a video” slots are low quality rubbish, but I find it surprising how many are also using the religious angle to ply the grift.

It’s never surprising that the anti-sex ones are always some “tidy, respectable” white guy.

I tried reporting this one but essentially it doesn’t fit any of the categories Google feel are valid complaints.

A screenshot of the ad-reporting workflow telling us this is an advert from the United States by a guy called Joshua.
A screenshot of the reporting options, none of which fit why I find it objectionable.

@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

Josh my dude, you cant prove that souls are real, but we can prove that sex workers are. Guess which one we can prove you’re causing harm to with this bullshit behaviour?

Go have a wank and then work on your personality (I suggest you start with empathy, then scientific method). You’ll feel better when you stop judging others as a response to how you feel judged yourself. Good luck!

mattwilcox, (edited )
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@sarajw I did, but I somehow doubt Google will see it that way :/ none of the following options fit. Tried anyway.

@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@cferdinandi No, thankfully. That sounds dreadful.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@cferdinandi I will never understand how educated people can also buy into religion.

I mean, you do you (as long as you're not pushing anything onto anyone else), but... it just feels like an oxymoron to me.

mattwilcox, (edited )
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@cferdinandi It's not even that, it's the "Ok, taking your premise, why is your one right but any of these thousands of other religions wrong? Oh, you have a reason? Using the same mental tooling, come at that again from the perspective of any other religion. Show me an example of any religion that arose indepenedently in different places. No? Exactly. It stands up to no level of scrutiny beyond "because someone said so sometime, and this is the one I grew up with".

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@Tijn @sarajw @cferdinandi It’s almost as though the entire thing is a means of centralising wealth and power to a handful of educated and privileged white men by exploiting the fears of the less well educated.

Almost as though.

Coincidence, I’m sure. No historical evidence for that, I’m sure.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@sarajw @Tijn @cferdinandi The whole lot is based off the same source material. It’s just the degree of exploitation that’s in question. In any honest religion, the more well educated should be the first to see the holes in the doctrine, and the first to divest themselves of the obvious wrongs. Oddly, they don’t. Can’t imagine why. Anyway, there a donation box on the way out, and the vicar is meeting with the town council later so chop-chop!

Why I have not trusted the BBC for many years. The bias is absolutely obvious and has been for decades.

“The impartiality of the BBC” is and always has been a useful lie from the people running it. (Due to the “unique way the BBC is funded”, you can guess who has the last word, and control of its steering)

Charlie has this 100% right in both his replies https://wandering.shop/@cstross/112548502516068146

I will.

Washed the car for the first time all year. Waxed it too.

And so for the first time ever, when I tried to use it next, it stalled three times on startup. Only got going the fourth, and barely responded to the accelerator until it ran for a handful of seconds.

I think power washing the wheel arch interiors has got water somewhere it was not happy with. Wellll I hope it sorts itself out. I do not need a fucked car, thank you.

One of these pictures is the way it is because of poorly written regulations influencing what’s most profitable for an industry sector to build.

Can you guess which it is? https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/112535649882421445

I've written up some details on an interesting css trick to allow containers to take on a custom top and bottom shape using composed image-masks and a few clever calculations.

https://www.andrewwalpole.com/blog/custom-top-and-bottom-css-container-masks/

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@walpolea I figured it must be a rounding issue as I couldn't see anything wrong with the code - and rounding has historically been a PITA with things like this.
