Middle aged white guy trying to become less ignorant over time. I build websites the "traditional" way.

I’ve been building websites for ~20yrs. Progressive Enhancement, HTML/CSS/JS, and accessible practices will always be core to quality work. Frameworks come and go.

Baby Metal and Electric Callboy doing a collab?

This should be good, and a great fit, those two bands took Metal in entirely different directions than anyone expected, focussed on being fun, and both are a delight for it.

Today at AccessU I weighed in on a group discussion and one of folks said they were surprised I wasn’t more cynical about the topic. Someone else in a separate chat commented how measured I was in my responses from what they expected. Another wondered why I wasn’t swearing.

I get the sense my online persona might be a lot gruffer than I am IRL. Might need to tweak one of those.

@aardrian Ooof, yeah this sounds familiar. Same here.

ooooo... I have just found Quartz: https://quartz.jzhao.xyz/

"Obsidian compatibility"... You have my attention.

Because, honestly, I think if I'm ever going to publish "my personal website" again, it's going to need to be exactly that: written and managed and linked all in Obsidian.

I just need to see how easily I can adjust this thing's HTML and CSS (because I am never happy with anyone elses).

    Absolutely everything I've been exposed to about Nijisanji leads me to loath that company. Nothing but stories of abuse of their talent - both mental and financial.

    At the same time, everything I've seen about VShojo is the absolute opposite.

    Watching these previously crushed people find a place that treats them like humans and not animals to be worked to death... It really is "corporate internet" vs "the original content-creator empoerwing internet" writ large.

    In mind of the fact that voice assistants and many AI things are almost always coded female (because things you give orders to, treat as a service provider, and own are "naturally female" apparently), is any work being done for gender-less voices?

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @brandon Heh, been a long time since I set up a new device. I'll have a look, ta. Last time I remember there being only male and female in the UK.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @brandon Ah, found the options. All clearly gendered, two "posh brit" (one female, one male), one "common" woman, and one "black guy from laaahndan innit bruv" male.

    Amusingly, the first female voice says "Hi, I'm Siri" in an American accent before switching.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @ryanroberts @brandon I just switched to that one actually when I discovered it. The idea that everyone not a Brit seems to have (based on foreign media) is that the two accents here are “the Queen” or “never seen the letter t in their life” - is a bit maddening.

    That Open AI Chat GPT4 video is gross. I’ve never met any woman ever who talks like that or would ever talk like that. It sounds like a 15 year olds wet dream of what women sound like. If any actual real women were involved in that I’d be very surprised. Well done you tech-bro douche bags. Get in the fucking bin.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @russpoulter Also following on the "if the thing is supposed to be subservient or providing a service, the thing is coded female".

    That’s the joinery finished. Alas I am out of shellac or varnish; so it’ll have to wait now. Need to fit a backboard once that’s done, and decide if the bottom compartment will be for a basket drawer or to put some doors on it.

    It’s not perfect, but it’s not too bad.

    A close up of the top section showing that the top shelf is made with a lapped dovetail joint.
    The side table is on top of my workbench. It has no backing board yet and no finish applied. It is made of redwood (a softwood pine), and it has two internal compartments.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @cferdinandi As a rule of thumb it's my belief all people have a bias to:

    1. Do whatever is easiest first.
    2. To justify that choice as also being a good solution.
    3. To reject changing (1) unless (2) becomes impossible.

    It applies to all aspects of being a person. We're fundamentally "efficiency machines" but with a focus on "the moment". We bias to what's least effort unless we have strong counter motivation and spare spoons.

    • A pretty person just framing "your thing" isn't going to tip any scales for me, ok.

    Anyone have any pointers on what CSS/HTML I may have inadvertently used that is stopping the browsers "focus-visibility" heuristics from applying?!

    As in, I have the styles, and they work when you use Inspector to force "focus-visibility" on my anchors and buttons... but the browser is not triggering them when tabbing through.

    Never had this issue before. Happening in FF and Chrome, so it's something "deliberate".

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    Unfortunately, I can't find anything about what these "browser heuristics" actually are to try debugging what's going on.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @muddymoles Yeah, the thing that makes me confused is it's the same base CSS I always use (which works), and if you force the state in Inspector the rules do apply. It's just that the state isn't being invoked normally.

    I'm put it on the back burner for now, and I'll come back to it. I have to have done something, but as this is "browser magic" it's going to be a game of rip out chunks of CSS to see when it works again.

    tips for understanding and memorizing alignment stuff.

    • align vs justify: think of an inline flow, where justify keyword of text-align controls the text in an inline direction. And for align think of vertical-align, which controls it over the block axis.

    • items vs content: an “item” is something that can be controlled by itself, via -self properties. content is a single entity, where you align the whole chunk of things, without a way to override it per item.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @kizu Honestly, some of the worst named feaures of modern CSS. I can never remember these because the context of each label is not self-explanatory.

    block-auto-align, inline-auto-align, block-align and inline-align would make much more sense to me. And I bet you can tell from reading those which is which.

    Naming; always one of the hardest problems of anything.

    📝 New on Piccalilli: I’m worried about the tabbing behaviour, rather than the syntax and name of CSS masonry

    There’s a lot of chatter about CSS masonry at the moment. Should it be called “masonry” and should it be grid? Let’s worry about the basics first.

    Scotland is treated as a free lucky dip of votes for the English parties. They come north, stick their hands in the bag and see how many votes they can pull out to get their leader into No.10.

    It's free because they don't have to do anything for Scotland, except lie and mislead the gullible.
    They give nothing back.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @Hadenuff @svgeesus Oh, as an English person I can tell you they also don’t do anything here either. And I also would like independence from Westminster. Those idiotic ghouls do not represent me.

    Good luck with the independence! Please keep a seat open for us in Europe; we want to be back once we boot these absolute parasites out of power.

    mattwilcox,
    @mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

    @svgeesus @Hadenuff The problem is we first need proportional representation instead of first past the post. But they knew that’d be the end of both main parties and so … here we remain.
