Drexel runs on Microsoft-based infrastructure instead of Google, so I'm looking at replacing Paperpile for my reference manager. Current leading contender is to go back to Zotero, but want ping you all for better possible options first :).

Need to work on Mac + iPad, with the ability to mark up PDFs either in-app or in another PDF reader (other might be preferred, so I can use the same markup environment for both papers and student writing). Is Zotero still the winner? Something else you like?

What’s an interesting 12-week -related project for computer science undergrads? 🧑🏽‍🏫

I’m teaching a class for Princeton undergrads in the Fall 🍂 and I want to give them an option to work on a project focused on either building a system, or studying something about how people use the Fediverse.

Some ideas:

@Niloufar @andresmh such an important question. tbh it's why I may well wind down @mdx in favor of Bluesky (but keep this acct for academic community discussion, at least as long as the academic twitter disapora is mostly here) — Mastodon norms & vibes just aren't receptive to shitposting, and it isn't fun like twitter was at its best.

Had the last regular meeting of our research group today. Soon it is time for new adventures! https://md.ekstrandom.net/blog/2023/04/changes

Really excited to be a part of an effort to build shared infrastructure for research with real users of a news recommendation platform. Stay tuned over next couple years for more details, like a name and opportunities to propose experiments you'd like to run on the platform. https://new.nsf.gov/news/advancing-artificial-intelligence-research

@andresmh Still reviewing some of those details now that the funding is real (is the originally-proposed MVP still the best thing to build first?). Long-term, it will hopefully be its own platform (like MovieLens).

@andresmh That is a live idea!

If I were teaching ethics again next year, I’d totally use this as a class case study. Regardless of the merits of opt in/out in general, what a dumpster fire of ethical reasoning. Unless you’re a utilitarian with a very specific set of assumptions about utility. (HT @Edent) https://github.com/rom1504/img2dataset/issues/293

@andresmh @Edent I think there are several things here:
• scraping image content (more costly for host)
• explicitly for purpose of AI training datasets (using artist content to build their competitor)
• refusal to consider opt-in, and documenting how to bypass the opt-out

But the thing I’m particularly picking up on is the dev’s framing of opt-in as clearly unethical. That, IMO, is nonsense.
