@nanode@firefish.consummatetinkerer.net

Currently tinkering with stuff on the sunny South Coast of the UK.

By day I am one of those people that 'does something with computers', usually around data visualisation.

By night I'm usually wandering around #NoMansSky or #ElderScrollsOnline building stupid stuff in both.

#EFF and #ORG supporter.

Been using #PGP since 2000 and no-one has ever mailed me.

Exploratory question:

Are there fedi/mastodon options for creating private lil discussion enclaves a la chat groups/rooms? Perhaps using groups or lists (features I haven't really explored the functionality of)?

I am pondering gathering some folks for side discussion, out of the public eye, for deeper collective conversations.

@vlrny

I don't think Mastodon has those abilities, and I've not seen their roadmap.

sorry, does have invite only 'Groups' you can chat in.

I'm not sure if 'Groups' are joinable across servers or whether all the people in the group need to be on the same server, say, calckey.social

Also there are, 'Channels' which are special interest groups that anyone on that server can join.

(I think Channels may be federating in the future.)

@vlrny

No, 'Channels' is one of the unique Firefish features.

There is a longer explanation of the Firefish features here:

I'm not sure if reading this will muddy the waters or not.

😆

Feel free to ask anything, I'll try and help.

Firefish was rebranded last week from Calckey.

I think because the back end was rewritten for something faster.

@vlrny

There's not a great deal on the Interwebs that I can find out about Channels.

Chris is pretty much the authoritative voice around this stuff tho:

I went to see Christopher Nolan's last night. It is a masterpiece, it is his best film to date.

It has been quite a long time since a movie unsettled me the way that Oppenheimer did...which I think is good.

The only thing I would say the terrifying impact of the dropping of the bombs upon the Japanese people & nation could have been dealt with more.

Murphy was hauntingly good. Nice to be reminded why Downey Jr won an Oscar!
Blunt was superb. Oldman was a surprise.

@jacqui76

Good to hear, I have tickets for a showing tomorrow !

@jacqui76

Yeah, I'm not expecting a feel-good film, so I think I've got my expectations managed.
