I mean it, Charlotte. If you sleep this afternoon you won’t sleep tonight, and if you’re awake in the night you will plan bad things. Start your jigsaw puzzle

@purplepadma Ugh I know this dilemma too well. I hope the puzzle helps a bit!

Afternoon. I stayed in bed until 11 then got up because Tom and I were due to meet a friend for lunch at 12pm. I really didn’t want to go, but I know I’m not safe at home alone at the moment so I trailed miserably up the hill. I actually found I was able to act somewhat normal.

The food was good and overall I felt better for having gone out. Then I went to the pharmacy to get some promethazine for sleep but was told I can’t have it because it interacts with lamotrigine. I have had in on prescription many times! I am running out of temazepam 🥺

I have thrown money I don’t really have at the problem of my depressive inability to concentrate and bought a tapestry kit and a jigsaw. I can do those while I listen to audiobooks or music and it will occupy me just enough to take the sting out of the intrusive thoughts (which are pretty bad).

@purplepadma Sorry to hear things are rough :( I hope they slowly improve x

friends, how do you handle having your spelling corrected? This week I’ve had an email telling me about a misspelling on my website (admittedly that could be useful to know but it’s still not something I really want my contact form used for) and had comments at work on spelling on drafts (that were shared for convenience and I thought it was clear they weren’t the final version). I always think of myself as ‘not very dyslexic’ but then I wonder if that’s an oversimplification!

I was feeling kind of lost and slightly sad but I’ve just been reading my Mastodon feed and checking out interesting articles and boosting cat pics and enjoying shitposts and I really feel so much better. People who think all social media is toxic have no idea

@purplepadma This place remains the best of the social media platforms!

The cat wants me BOTH to leave the patio door open so he can come and go as he pleases AND to stay in the now-very-chilly living room in case he wants to come in for a cuddle. And what do you know, I’m on the sofa under the blanket with the door open. Happy Caturday

Repeats mantra I will not have a meltdown on the flight home. I will not have a meltdown on the flight home… (Even though they took my seat away again and made me fight for a seat I can barely walk to… and are now threatening not to let me take my wheelchair to the gate - yes I know this is illegal but they prob won’t let me on the plane if I do have a meltdown so, y’know - and have generally been treating me like luggage…) At least I had a lovely holiday in between flight nightmares!

naomilawsonjacobs,
@naomilawsonjacobs@hcommons.social avatar

And now I am on the plane and they are actually refusing to let me use the toilet I can walk to. For the whole flight. Kill me now. Disabled people, highly recommend you do not fly Swiss Air.

Peak wheelchair user life is trying to get on a plane to see your family and being told your wch battery is too big even though you registered it in advance. And being treated like it’s all your fault. Thanks, Swiss Air. (We’re currently trying to retrieve my other battery from elsewhere and may miss flight…)

naomilawsonjacobs,
@naomilawsonjacobs@hcommons.social avatar

@purplepadma Yep… Currently trying to get hold of other battery. From a car which is not here. May not make flight. And they still have to approve that battery to fly. And they could have told us in advance!!!

A blog post on paying disabled people and valuing our work, and how academic gets in the way of that. These are thoughts that have come out of some writing I've been doing on inclusive disability research. https://naomilawsonjacobs.com/at-the-gates/

Call for papers - ‘Intersectional and Critical Thought: ADHDers Think Back’, for a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies. The editors are seeking critical intersectional papers that “‘think back’, explicitly or implicitly, against medical and denialist models of ADHD.”

“At this point, it is fair to conclude that ADHD Studies is an acritical and non intersectional field, produced by non-ADHDers. What we need is critical and intersectional ADHD knowledge produced by ADHDers themselves.”

Submissions are welcomed from academics, PhD students and activists. See the CfP for a great list of topics, from “Trans-ing while ADHD-ing: questions for intersectional justice,” to critical approaches to ADHD and religious faith.

@EVDHmn @theADHDAcademic The deadline has been extended to Feb 2025. I just edited my post - sorry, I didn’t see that the website hadn’t been updated to show this. They emailed to let people in their networks know. I expect they will update the website soon

@EVDHmn @theADHDAcademic @actuallyautistic Can I ask you to field questions to the organisers? I just shared to spread the word. I don’t know anything about the project beyond having heard it’s happening

If one more person tells me that "research shows you process information more effectively when you hand-write" in response to me talking about the joy of digital journals etc, I will get very annoyed. My fingers dislocate when I hand-write. That's why I've been typing since I was 12, and now type almost as fast as I think. I process things just as well in digital format as you do on paper, thank you. I do not need learn to "slow down and hand write." I need you to be less of an ableist hipster. Now, may I introduce you to the joys of using Craft, Bookends and Scrivener all at the same time, following the delightful whims of an ADHD brain having all the ideas at once? Perfection.

"Where Did the Open Access Movement Go Wrong?" This is a really interesting interview. While I strongly support the movement, it's also clear that OA has been coopted by many traditional journals to make money, entrenching barriers to academic publishing for unfunded, nontraditional and marginalised scholars. Leaving many of us unable to afford to publish. (Not forgetting the fantastic mainly-online journals that have no APCs on principle, which I know there are more and more of.)
