This "explanation" for Apple's embarrassing "those photos you deleted suddenly came back after an OS update" bug is bringing up more questions for me than answers.

In MacOS, I often take a screenshot, right-click on the thumbnail that pops up, then select "Save to Clipboard." I've been doing this for years but still have to parse the words carefully. Why oh why doesn't it just say "Copy"? So much easier at least for my brain to grok.

@stshank I dunno if this is it, but "copy" means "duplicate" to most people, which is not quite the same idea as copying to clipboard

@stshank it took me like a decade to realize I could skip a step by adding Ctrl to the screenshot hotkey to , which is what I really want to do at least 90% of the time anyway.

I don't know what Qwant's business model is anymore. They've moved all the stuff I dislike about the service behind a free login. So by simply not having an account, I avoid the automatic answers and AI summaries and stuff and just get a list of actual search results.

@TheBreadmonkey I've been learning a lot about shame lately while trying to understand what's wrong with my brain and learned something somewhat startling: shame requires a secrecy component, and telling someone about what you're ashamed about can actually derail the shame.

If you're feeling any shame Id be happy to watch a video recording of the dance to alleviate it for you...

I don't know who needs to hear this, but DuckDuckGo makes their money by selling the eyeballs of its users to the highest bidder. What you search for affects the ads you see, because they sell "show this ad to anyone searching for that."

It's still surveillance capital when your actions dictate how much money the search engine makes, even when the advertisers don't know who you are.

Additionally, DuckDuckGo isn't going to give you better search results than Google or Bing; they come right out and say that they're focused on being an "answer engine" rather than a search engine, the same way Google and Bing have shifted to focusing on answers rather than search results.

So "just use DuckDuckGo" actually solves none of what's wrong with search engines, and suggesting people do that is probably counter-productive at best.

Two Santa Cruz students uncover security bug that could let millions do their laundry for free

"In another case, the students added an ostensible balance of several million dollars into one of their laundry accounts, which reflected in their CSC Go mobile app as though it were an entirely normal amount of money for a student to spend on laundry."

This is hilarious. Another good example of client-side security with none on the back end.

my brain isn't currently working in "research mode" so I'm just going to ask if anyone else has already researched this.

Is there an API I can use to programmatically access Android's "Live Captions" text? I want to automate "taking notes" while listening to YouTube videos. My idea is a bluetooth button I can hit to record the current timestamp and live captions of a couple sentences before and after into an outline.
