I had a sticker book for a couple years as a child that was made out of one of those photo albums where you pull up a clear sheet and just put loose photos and stuff under and then they all get held in place when you put the clear sheet back down.

I had this, because I would never ever remove the backing from a sticker. I wanted to collect stickers, not decorate a book with them.

"Once it's been stuck on something it's no longer a sticker!"

Embarrassing mixup when a cop asked me if I knew anything about this paraphernalia, but I thought he said "this paraffin nail art." Luckily for me, the officer was even more into paraffin nail art than I was. We cleared it all up without having to go downtown, but there was a paraffin nail art exhibition downtown, so we ended up going anyway.

There's a small bit in The Big Lebowski (1998) that I think I missed when I saw it in the theater. When The Dude says "this aggression will not stand, man," it's a callback to the President Bush Desert Storm speech playing on the TV in the grocery store at the beginning. (Where the dude drinks the cream right out of the carton in the aisle.)

Mood: waiting patiently for Google to delete my Google Play Developer account due to my lack of agreement to new policies. (And lack of any interest in ever putting anything in Google Play again.)

They just assigned me my "opt in or die" date, which is December 4th 2024.

When Redhat went public, I was surprised to be invited to purchase shares at some kind of insider price, which was really confusing until I determined that it had to be because of a bug report I sent notifying their webmaster that one of the things on the site was passing in a path to a file on the file system, and that it was vulnerable to directory traversal via the addition of ../../../ to what was passed in, allowing one to request ../../../etc/passwd and ../../../etc/shadow.

They never responded about that report, but they must have appreciated it. Sadly, I didn't have any money or interest in participating in the stock market at the time.

Long ago I had this idea for a dumb bit, where I'd start YouTube channel doing 10-minute GIMP tutorials to teach people what I'd learned after using GIMP for a couple decades.

The short version is it'd be one of those screen cast type videos, and every episode the entire 10 minutes would be filled with bullshit like dependency resolution problems preventing GIMP from launching, recompiling the Linux kernel because my graphic tablet stopped working again, and then recompiling the kernel again because the graphics tablet now works, but I can no longer capture sound in my recordings.

There are real, significant problems at Boeing. But every week when we hear another story about "a Boeing-made plane" delivered a decade ago that now has what's 100% a maintenance issue — and thus the fault of the plane's owner rather that the plane's manufacturer — it illustrates a major problem with ad-funded media.

People click on stories about how fucked up Boeing is, so any excuse to publish another one is fair game.

You can talk until you're blue in the face about how there's "a firewall between editorial and ad sales," but that obviously either doesn't mean what you think it does, or you think it means something to me that it doesn't 🤷

Perhaps I should just start a religion* around the principle of designing all aspects of life to minimize the profit your actions cause to incorporated entities

  • I would structure it this way because in the United States, doing a thing because a religion said to gives you special rights you would not get if you did the thing because you wanted to

A position on which I continue to get a startling amount of pushback from well-meaning folks is that "privacy-preserving" surveillance capital doesn't address the actual threat model.

The problem with surveillance capital isn't that advertisers "know who you are," it's that your eyeballs are being sold to the highest bidder based on actions you take. It's not about "privacy" in terms of your identity at all.

Advertisers don't give a shit who you are.

Preventing advertisers from knowing who you are does nothing to stop every action you take being monetized by the companies you made the misfortune of giving data to in the past.

A common objection I hear a lot:

"How is that any different than putting cat product ads in cat magazines, smart-ass?"

It's not. You just need to remember that those cat magazines only exist to be a medium to place cat product ads into.

Magazines make their money by selling the eyeballs of their readers to companies who'd like the human attached to those eyeballs to give them some money.

The ads in magazines do not "make it possible for there to be a cat magazine," the cat magazine makes it possible for there to be cat product ads.

Please pretend to shop local in the pretend city on your TV while there's still time.

I thought it was bad when the Walmart in Roku City opened, but that's got nothing on the deal with Walmart to put "based on your shopping data" personalized ads into Disney+ and Hulu.
