I can’t speak for everyone, but the transition from one version to another loses almost as many features as it gains. It is especially crappy about its provided sprites, to the point where we keep losing entire sprite types, many sprite sets are just plain unfinished or untested, and they insisted we move from sprites that people could somewhat take seriously to chibi/moe sprites that nobody on Earth can take seriously for an adventure game.
Another issue is that the series keeps releasing new versions that are incremental improvements at best, and they want us to pay a lot of money for each installment and half-sequel with said very few improvements, and also pay for a lot of content packs. There are things that should have been added 15 years ago and still aren’t here. They can’t even allow us to customize menus, and countless other issues. Honestly the dev team seems like they’re not very good at programming or art in the first place, and they’re just raking in money from incremental improvements over many decades. People try to excuse the engines’ lack of basic features with “but you can program it in Ruby/Javascript yourself!” Which is a really bad thing to rely on for a game-creation engine of this type.
I’m sure other people are annoyed by things I’m not even thinking of right now.
I know I’m going to get downvoted for this, but “modern UI” doesn’t have to suck. It’s just that a lot of companies don’t give a shit. Modern design is about accessibility— about the ease of finding and using things (including general readability). Google and many others have violated these principles with their “modern” UIs. People shouldn’t say “modern bad”, they should say “Google bad”.
Serebii.net on the other hand is “old web”— and man is it an unusable, unreadable, un-navigatable, overwhelming piece of crap. And I will take that opinion to the grave. Both Google and Serebii.net can be awful, fam.
Okay, but… it’s just a page. Try building a store or something like Lemmy with just static HTML and only enough CSS to make larger or bolder fonts and see where that gets you.
Google is bad, but nuance in your argument is still important.
I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....
Honestly I hated Calibre. The worst part was how it just couldn’t render some books properly, and there was no way to zoom many of them, even via CSS. Readability is #1 priority, but Calibre was absolutely broken for a lot of that.
I ended up using software that could made thumbnails from PDF, CBR, CBZ, and ePUB, then I used Sumatra for all of it.
I think PotPlayer is a lot better than VLC— although it’s a little weird out-of-the-box, so you have to change a few of its many, many customizable settings.
That’s not what I was told on the multiple sites that I stumbled on when searching for an all-purpose digital book reader. But you’re probably right, and they’re probably wrong.
“When a toddler kills someone in cold blood…” You live in a strange, sad, non-existent little world.
“Figure out what went wrong…” Like… figure out why a toddler is a psychopath? Once again, you live in a strange, sad, non-existent little world.
I shouldn’t need to give you a crash course on the mentalities and development of young children. You should realize what’s stupid about what you’re saying on your own.
I’ll say this though: people who believe that children should “behave” in a way that resembles adults in any capacity are the extreme majority of child abusers. Not malicious people— people who are ignorant and controlling. If you think 6-year-olds can be mass-murdering psychopaths in the way that adults can be, you are likely one of the kinds of people who would be overbearing and then eventually frustrated enough with your child to abuse them. Source: me, survivor of a whole lot of child abuse from a lot of different people, and I’m writing a novel partially about this whole subject.
