I don't think Mastodon will fail. I like the people I've met here by and large, but I am still extremely concerned by the way defederation can work at the server level as opposed to the user level and it doesn't seem like most think this is a problem. I want to reach the wider world and vice versa without being invisibly prevented from doing so. Maybe this is selfish of me, but if I'm honest that's my use case for social media. I want news and information and discourse and while Mastodon is making strides, if the fediverse is just going to unilaterally cut off a huge part of the world, I will have a choice to make on where to have my main presence.
This article sums up the issues I have with the #Fediverse quite comprehensively. I want this to work out. I don't wan to go back to Musk's hellpit. I'm just becoming frustrated.
It really feels like I'll need to set up a personal instance if all this "pact" nonsense goes through. The idea of pre-emptively being prevented from talking to people I might be interested in just because they're on a corporate instance is anathema to me. I suppose that's the beauty of the Fediverse though, I can just go it alone.
I don't wan tto bang on about this but every time I see that giant military aeroplane (the C17) flying towards the Submarine search area, I get increasingly angry at the fact that THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD is moving for these 5 people and these 5 people only.
I'm not saying this shouldn't be happening-- it should! Life is precious. But this should be the level of effort EVERYONE gets, not just well-connected billionaires.
