So @element took part in the European Police Congress in Berlin, had a booth and presentation there, and is proudly posting on the fedi about it.

I’m currently paying them $11.90 a month to host my homeserver on their EMS platform.

My payment in April will have been the last.

It’s one thing to provide FLOSS comms to the government. It’s another to proudly support our fucked up police system.

@mihira The thing about the Rechtsstaat is that law doesn't apply to only those that everyone likes, but also to those who are doing bad. You might not like the principle of equality before the law, but that's how our legal system happens to work. Also, we have courts for disputes; no reason to fight injustice yourself by occupying property.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@mihira Seriously? Police arresting people for illegally occupying others' property is your argument why human dignity isn't respected in Germany? Like, wow. Imagine being allowed to commit offences because you don't like someone else...

@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fnwbr Okay, then surely you have the evidence for Element handing out that data to police, and I'd be delighted to see it.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@scy Didn't you just write “Element collaborating with police”?

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@scy So they help Germany's police establish Matrix as their internal messaging platform. Now, would you kindly point me to the evidence that proves how exactly Element have compromised the Matrix protocol to hand over chat histories and contact lists to the authorities?

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ExtraFlauschig And to me, this sounds much more like a working Rechtsstaat than systematic injustice. Sure, racial profiling etc. must be countered, but that is already done, as it's illegal and therefore prosecuted.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@scy Since the Second World War, there's really only one meaning of “collaborating with police”, and it has an unsurpassably negative connotation.

@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fiveEyedBeast 🤡 🤡 🤡

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@scy Not sure how you got from “collaborating with police is unsurpassably negatively connoted” to “they broke E2EE in WWII” (which they did, incidentally), when my point is that “collaboration” means “betrayal” (which is not “my” perspectiveb btw).

Anway, have a nice day as well.

@mihira That wasn't peaceful protest:

“Hundreds of officers faced off on Friday against the demonstrators, who erected barricades and set several fires in front of the establishment in a bid to stop bailiffs from entering the Syndikat bar in the capital's Neukölln district.”

“A rally against the eviction last Saturday turned violent, with police and protesters clashing as demonstrators played loud music, set off fireworks, threw stones at officers and chanted ‘Berlin hates police.’”

@ExtraFlauschig The articles you referenced literally say:

“Unprovoked checks on persons solely on the basis of a phenotypical appearance violate Art. 3 (3) of the Basic Law, the General Equal Treatment Act and the prohibition of racial discrimination laid down in the International Convention against Racism.”

“According to the Ministry of the Interior, at least the number of criminal cases for police violence and abuse of authority is increasing in the country.”

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fiveEyedBeast @daniel You haven't read the original post, have you?

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ExtraFlauschig You almost got it right. Except that my argument is not that “we have laws against police misconduct, so it doesn't happen”. Instead, my argument is that we have a working Rechtsstaat that prosecutes such misconduct on the basis of just laws, wherefore the state does not “ultimately protect capital and property over human life every day”, which was my original point (that still stands).

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fiveEyedBeast @daniel This discussion is about the German police forces, not about “police in general”. https://chaos.social/@scy/110321162229302299

If your only argument for why Germany is a fascist dictatorship that allows its police to be oppressive and totalitarian is a phrase like “only naivety permits defence of oppressive institutions”, then you don't really have an argument at all.

Like, that's not an actual explanation of anything, and you're not even able to name a single example.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fiveEyedBeast why do I only smell a Gestapo comparison in the distance just waiting to pounce out of the shrubbery

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@mihira As I understood you, you criticized police for returning that occupied property to its owner, which they were allowed to do, thanks to equality of the law.

By “we” I mean every person in Germany.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fnwbr “Collaboration” is highly negatively connoted, so I assumed you meant it in terms of compromisation.
