Ok Folks! At “networking” event tonight - I’m a bit more socially anxious than normal even, toss me good conversation questions as I hate “small talk”
Help 🙂😬😅

@MardraS What is your favorite dinosaur?

planetju,
@planetju@mastodon.online avatar

@MardraS Is it work-related? What about just asking them why they decided to attend the event and what they specialize in?

Das macht auch die Vögel froh.
Und die Katze sowieso.

I work from home but am expected to go into the office for a retreat tomorrow.

I hate retreats. Please help me come up with an excuse to miss work tomorrow.

@BeazLouise I'd recommend against what I seem to have caught. Keeps me away from work but the fever and cough are not fun.

No it doesn't make sense for me to buy a bunch of new sheet music and then immediately put it all on the bookshelf without playing any of it but in my defense I'm VERY irresponsible with my money

planetju,
@planetju@mastodon.online avatar

@Lana That makes a lot of sense. You may have the urge to play exactly that sheet music at 10 pm on a Sunday and then it's right there waiting for you.

What kind of bird is that? It eats out of the robin feeder but seems a bit too fluffy for a robin ;) The resident robin is also slightly confused.

Spring snowflakes already out mid-February.

The first spring flowers in the garden have it rough since every critter seems to enjoy a bite. Still happy to see the first color.

Inspired by a recent cross-disciplinary meeting, here's an attempt to explain a geology word using the most common 1000 words checked by text editor inspired by xkcd:
https://splasho.com/upgoer5/#

Peridotite
A rock which comes from a deep place of our world and looks green because it is formed of pieces that are also green. This rock is heavy and makes up a large part of the deep rock world.

Figure caption excluded from that rule.

@HailsandAles
Oooh, I wasn't aware of a new single. Thanks! It's starting to grow on me.

A relatively recent comment asks if astrobiology is serious science.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-023-02165-9

Unfortunately the main text is hiding behind a paywall so not accessible to everyone but the short summary is: yes it is.
As somebody working in an astrobiology research group, I am more intrigued why this still seems to be a question that needs to be addressed.

What do you think?

planetju,
@planetju@mastodon.online avatar

@yoguiignacio
It's more like a sub discipline since we have a tendency to specialization in most sciences. Examples: microbiology or botany are both part of the broader discipline of biology.

planetju,
@planetju@mastodon.online avatar

@yoguiignacio

The generally accepted definition:
'Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe.'
Source: https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/about/

Last I've checked Earth is a planet in one of many solar systems in the universe, so how is there lack of evidence?

This is Roger and he shows up at my door to the garden several times a day to get suet pellets. He also has a habit of stacking the pellets in his beak during nesting season. We're friends for a few years now. He gets food in return for brightening my day.
