porquenolosdos,

The truth is, fundamentally the dude is right. The problem is of course that he's being disingenuous, he's making excuses to expose himself to children. Seeing some naked dude isn't a big deal, deliberately showing children degeneracy and trying to pass it off as harmless is a big deal. In the woodchipper they go.

If you let your kid have a smartphone or unrestricted access to the internet you're probably doing a lot more damage to them than them seeing some guy ride a bicycle naked. Theyre watching porn at 12, by the time they're 16 they likely can't even get off without moving images in front of them, and possibly needing to up the stakes as time goes on, graduating to tranny porn and what not. They're on discord being asked for nudes, they're in groups telling them to cut their dicks off. You're a bad parent blaming the world for your failure.

The problem with the naked guy isn't a naked guy, the problem is that they're being invited to an event entirely created to showcase depravity, surrounded by people some of whom are there specifically for the children, glorifying self destructive behavior, and deliberately trying to attract children to such an event.

porquenolosdos,

You don't recreate the existing communities, you create a new, more compelling experience. If you do that the communities will come here all by themselves. Work on the software, let the user bases of the different instances build their own communities.

What's your "base" stack of choice?

How do you set up a server? Do you do any automation or do you just open up an SSH session and YOLO? Any containers? Is docker-compose enough for you or are you one of those unicorns who had no issues whatsoever with rootless Podman? Do you use any premade scripts or do you hand craft it all? What distro are you building on top...

porquenolosdos,

Sqlite where possible, nginx, linux, no containers. I hate containers.

Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

I mean there's Reddit ofc, as well as Twitter in its entirety, Discord is implementing some dumb updates, there are issues with Tumblr as well as everything to do with Meta, and I'm sure there are plenty more (and I haven't even touched other digital media, for example the Sims). Why is it all happening in the span of about a...

porquenolosdos,

Because user freedom and experience is diametrically opposed to corporate control and ad driven profit seeking.

These companies have continued to function on round after round of VC fundraising, diversifying their corporate holdings to the point that theyre basically wall street funds, and providing little innovation past initial product launch. When the stock market takes a downturn they become insolvent and they have to squeeze profit which means squeezing users. They have no choice, most of these business models weren't viable to begin with.

porquenolosdos,

There's always the nuclearoption: ban everyone, remove everything on the way out the door. I'm sure reddit admins can reverse it, they probably store everything in the database to sell later, but at least if they try to pull that stunt replacing mods they can be in for a huge pain in the ass.

porquenolosdos,

Imagine your entire website gets moderated for free and you still can't turn a fucking profit.

porquenolosdos,

I think they seriously overestimate how many users are going to really remain. Users go where the content is. Users will use 2 applications if the content is in 2 places. Once you get to that point reddit has nothing to offer. This will end badly for them.

porquenolosdos,

Sure, but meme enthusiasts will go where the memes are. They're not all on reddit anymore, and reddit isn't even a good source for spicy content at all. They'll go to reddit, right after they get done checking their pleroma feed or a discord channel. Eventually the engagement on their recycled gold will be so bad they won't even bother anymore.
