Unpopular opinion:

Songs with lyrics that are essentially "random or trivial, find your own meaning" aren't as valuable or good as the rest. It escalated in the 90s --

"kitty on my foot and I wanna touch it"

"peaches come in a can they were put there by a man in a factory downtoooown"

-- but dates back to at least the Beatles and heavy drug use among musicians in the 60s and 70s.

Probably popular on the corporate side for "appealing to a broad audience"

@jrefior I'd argue that nonsense was just as popular if not more so in "old time" music from the prerecorded era. For example, here's James Leva playing Dance All Night With a Bottle in Your Hand:
