I'm a newbie. I'm a bit confused by all the mentions of "rice" online on Linux forums. Would love to know more!

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft "rice" is a term that comes from car hot rodding, its where there's a bunch of asian style cosmetic mods.

https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=riced+cars&iax=images&ia=images

In linux it would be a lot of blingy desktop gadgets and so forth.

Why does Python get so much hate? It is literally like a Basic programming language. Easy to learn and guaranteed to get a job because of massive demand.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft slow, single threaded, not strictly typed. dependency system is a bit janky and error prone.

was chatting with a friend about some of the challenges with teaching yourself programming topics:

  • you have random gaps that you don’t even know about
  • it's hard to assess your level, you might know a lot about one subtopic and be a total beginner elsewhere
  • it's very difficult to guess what other fellow autodidacts know about the subject

I've had to learn how to suss out what shared knowledge base I have with another programmer on any given topic quickly so that we can talk

@SnerkRabbledauber @b0rk Its starting from a point of gatekeeping and shaming is why. its more fun to explore a mysterious land of interesting ideas than mope over a list of one's deficiencies.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I heard they made the syntax hideous on purpose to indicate it was temporary, but then it never got changed after that. I hope its at least easy to parse.

Does anyone know of an easy way to use a computer as an automatic backup for a phone?

My mom has an android phone and takes lots and lots of photos, which have filled up her google storage to the point she can't send emails anymore.

I went over there last night and backed up a bunch of her photos to flash drives and deleted a ton of stuff from her google photos account to free up space.

But I had to turn off the auto backup in her phone so it wouldn't just fill her account up again.

She is worried about having her photos not backed up, so I'm wondering if there's a simple option for backing things up at home.

She is not very tech savvy, so it cannot be anything complicated.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I use SimpleSSHD to set up ssh on my phone and then an rsync script to back up my photos.

I prefer manually running this stuff, but one could configure SimpleSSHD to be always-on as a background service (there's a checkbox for that), and then schedule a periodic rsync backup on a local machine.

Checking to make sure photos got copied (for piece of mind) would require looking at the photo folder on the pc.

Maybe not the pinnacle of simplicity, but one more option.

Bikes are being stolen at work seemingly multiple times a week now, despite being locked up with U-locks. The latest theft involved a bike locked with both a U-lock and a cable lock.

I'm starting to think the only protection is having a really shitty bike.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online nice bikes go inside. shitty bikes used to be able to be outside at night, but not anymore. there's not much an angle grinder or dremel can't cut.

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk I have to look up how to cancel the last commit every time. Its always "oh right now I remember", after I see it.

submodule init vs update too. Is init for a new submodule or for the first time you check out a repo and need to get the submodules, but then update is similar and I guess you need to do both. Or not? And --recursive is missing from init (except in older versions of git), but you can do

git submodule update --init --recursive

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk To me part of the problem is git has no issue with submodules coming unglued from each other - you can check out another commit or branch on your root repo, but git does nothing to your submodules. You have to explicitly sync the submodules afterwards. I often end up building projects with submodules out of sync as a result.

Looks like a deliberate choice.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@gael I'm no biologist - but maybe a plausible theory is the tree grew straight through the metal bolt first, then later got twisted because it's upward motion was limited. like if you're lowering a string into a hole and it gets stuck, the string then bunches up after that

working on sketching a few different git workflows I've seen people use. what am I missing?

(I'm less interested in minor variations on these like how you manage tags or the exact details of how the feature branches work and more interested in completely different workflows)

pr06lefs, (edited )
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk there's the thing where you clone a repo in github and make a PR which goes upstream. For when you don't have any privileges on the original repo.

Another variant, making branches and PRs that commit to a dev branch instead of main.

Personally I like using feature branches and PRs even when I'm working on a solo project. Keeps changes grouped together, keeps my commits out of main until things are working. I usually commit frequently.

PCB of the day! Requiem for a 5.1K CC resistor 🔌💡🔧

We have a few gadgets around the house that, despite having a USB type C connector, do not abide by the USB C power delivery specification! They leave off or mis-connect the two 5.1K resistors required to tell a USB PD wall adapter that they want 5V 1A power, a common issue because the devices work fine with a USB A to C cable, and only Macbooks seem picky about this stuff: cheap power supplies blast 5V and call it a day.

pr06lefs,
@pr06lefs@mastodon.social avatar

@adafruit what's the problem again? These devices want 5V1A, but what do they get instead?
