No, China doesn’t count because that would challenge my worldview. I know I’m right, I just haven’t figured out how yet.

If China did the same thing with state resources this dude would have a half chub for the rest of his life

I feel like big_yikes is wrong for else. It would work better to replace Exception. Then use something like hits_different for else.

I'm a drug addict, AMA

Drug addicts/People who use drugs are probably the last marginalized social category that it’s totally OK to treat like shit. There’s a movement to promote drug users’ humanity and advocate for our civil rights (things like safe injection sites, safe supply, ending the War on Drugs), which is still in its very early...

You are going to rehab which indicates you want to stop using drugs, yet you are attached to the community of drug users. What is it about the community that draws you in, and do you think you can find that outside of that community?

What would have happened if they were more successful in occupying the building? I think they could hold out for a day or two if Trump publicly supported them and withheld any forces from violently removing them from the building. Then there would be a shit show on the news as the congress in exile would be fighting over whether to impeach in order to fix it. Papa John’s would prolong the occupation by feeding the occupiers. All the news stations would have 24/7 Situation Room style live reporting. The protestors would slowly get bored of it and leave in a trickle until only the diehards are left. At that point Trump realizes it makes them look stupid, so he quietly allows the special forces to remove them, but without any harm. There would be footage of them heroically exiting the building. They would be in Fox News and Fucker Carlson interviews for the rest of their lives and retire comfortably.

But on the whole, nothing would actually change

Something similar happened to my family in the last few years. I would recommend speaking with an attorney any way you can afford it. In our case, we basically gifted the assets to family members so they couldn’t be taken. But there might be some fuckery you can do with a trust.

Do you have any other mental conditions or are you neurodivergent? I think coping strategies would differ depending on, say, if you have OCD. Just my 2c.

Sorry if this is something you already know. I believe intrusive thoughts are commonly associated with ADHD, so if you aren’t already seeking ADHD treatment, that would be a good step if you have the means. I don’t have much more of use to add though.

Bernie is trashing whatever respect the left had for him with this conflict.

He posted this a few hours ago, pretending to have evolved toward a more aggressive stance against Israel … but it’s obviously worded in a way as to scapegoat Netanyahu specifically, while washing the hands of US empire and the Biden administration.

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

How the Stanford Prison Experiment convinced generations that humans are inherently selfish (web.archive.org)

Psychology has a repeatability problem. Turns out Zimbardo wasn’t completely honest about how hands-off the researchers were. The Stanford Prison Experiment is the latest famous experiment in psychology that is proving difficult to reproduce....

I’ve spent a significant amount of time in most states east of the Mississippi. A while ago I went to Texas for the first time outside the confines of an airport.

Texas is maybe the worst state I’ve been to. “Maybe” because I’m deciding if Louisiana is worse, excluding Nola.

If you hate pervasive Republican/conservative/Christian ideology, you will hate Texas. If you hate Libertarianism, you will hate Texas. If you hate car-dominated transit, you will hate Texas.

The best thing about Texas is tacos and general Tex-Mex food. Not a huge endorsement of a place if its best attributes are its external influences.

You make me want to cry. That’s (In my opinion) kind of cruel. But even so, I do respect YOUR opinion.

18+ NBC brought Fascist War Criminal, Bibi the Baby Killer, on to try to talk down to the protesters. It's not going as well as he wanted. (CW fascist bullshit) (piped.video)

Youtube is hiding the votes but desktop Piped shows 6206 upvotes vs 7,104 downvotes despite evangelical Jesus freaks and Hasbara trolls trying to prop this bastard up.

Arkansas man receives world's first eye transplant (www.bbc.co.uk)

Aaron James lost his nose, mouth and left eye in a work-related accident. Surgeons in New York successfully performed the reconstruction that included a whole-eye implant. His vision was not restored, but the first-of-its-kind procedure may help advance transplant medicine....

The eye is an external part of the brain. If they managed to restore vision, I think that would have a profound impact on our ability to repair brain injury overall.

I wonder if he will need to take rejection meds like recipients of other organs do.

Estonia is something else. They canceled a Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel project due to Chinese funding. Not sure if it was part of Belt and Road Initiative or just a private entrepreneur. But that would have been great, as right now it’s about €40 each way on a ferry.

I continue walking because I don’t want to normalize a mindset that pedestrians need to beg to use public paths. It should be drivers that feel mildly uncomfortable moving huge equipment through areas designed for pedestrian use.

even if I’m not financially impacted, I still care if someone steals my package. I think anyone would. It’s a hassle to get the merchant to rectify the situation, and sometimes that isn’t possible if the item was limited or sold out. That doesn’t even get to situations where someone really needs their package timely, like medication.

Looting from big box stores doesn’t bother me, but it’s not as harmless to take things from regular people’s doorsteps even if they might be made whole after arguing with customer support.

quarrk,
@quarrk@hexbear.net avatar

I won’t argue that it is spectacle. It clearly is for entertainment purposes—basically justice porn without involving the police, excluding the call center case.

I never got the vibe he was specifically targeting minorities or even poor people. I mean yeah if you’re in poverty then you might be more likely to steal, but stealing from other people in your neighborhood (ie same class) makes everyone hate them. You might be onto something with him though, maybe a general NIMBYism, but I think many people can relate to the frustration of having their package stolen, and I struggle to equate that frustration with some sort of class warfare when it impacts everybody who shops online.

The goal is to make one particular person as miserable as possible, on camera

The mantra on Hexbear is that bullying works. People are group shamed in the comments here with the aim of forcing reflection on actions/opinions. It’s fair game as long as the misery is kept in proportion, which IMO is true for a glitter bomb.
