Furry trash account, duh.
I'm ancient (40s) and tired. Guild Wars 2 main.

I RT a lot and this includes NSFW stuff. I also love to stalk some local timelines, which should explain why I randomly commented or RT'd one of your posts :)

Most of the time I don't intend to come off curt (and most of the time I don't come off curt), but sometimes I just can't phrase things properly. I'm sorry if while trying to be helpful I come off short.

House across the street has started hanging a set of overalls in the living room, so whenever I glance across while closing the upstairs curtains, it's like there's a guy just hanging there

ralesk,

@patterfloof okay that's legit scary looking XD

please stop presenting using light mode as something worth mocking or a worse experience

very often light mode is an accessibility and readability feature

some people just can't read on dark backgrounds well for example

or need higher contrast in general

or just work in a high-brightness environment where light mode just works better for them

ralesk,

@miunau @Polychrome I tune down my base blue in my terminal for that and midnight commander becomes good to look at :D

It's there a word for trying predictive text 3 times on a word, then giving up & typing each letter manually 'cos your phone won't get the right word?

powered up my abandoned Windows 7 box for a laugh & it refuses to update to any more modern version with assorted software errors & doesn't recognise the Win 11 installer as a win32 app

might flash ubuntu or nix onto it. thing's about a decade old, all mini-itx onboard everything & not upgradable

ralesk,

@patterfloof the "non-recognition" is probably that your win7 is 32-bit and the installer is 64

were web pages easier to build in the late 90s? before frameworks, when there was just you, notepad & the code (or the netscape page editor)

before js was what it is now, and every ISP would just give you a little FTP directory to put your site in

each site distinct & home-made. sure we had geocities, but that was another host, not a whole cookie-cutter site engine

ralesk,

@patterfloof HTML itself was simpler. Pretty hard to get it to look like you want it (quirks mode vs. standards mode, IE and Netscape and everyone else rendering vastly differently), which is definitely much less of a problem now. It was however impossible to write capital letter Applications with those tools. JS and DOM manipulations weren't exactly enough for it. But then, most people just wanted to make a site and not some ground breaking applications. And you had Flash for appish stuff.

But right now the entry bar is so high, you almost need to have the complexity abstracted away from you by the frameworks.

ralesk,

@patterfloof Of course not.

some tips if you find search engines useless these days:

  • if there's something in the results you want to exclude, use the minus (-) sign to exclude a certain keyword, e.g "dragons -ai" will exclude AI generated pictures from your dragon quest
  • if there's two or more subjects you'd like to search for in a context, but mutually exclusive, you can use (keywordA|keywordB), e.g: "cute pictures of (cats|dogs|dragons)"
  • use quotes (") to create emphasis, or search for a whole sentence in entirety.
ralesk,

@anthropy That assumes the search works and cares about user input at all :D

it'd be great if you could CW part of a toot

[whole paragrahphs of safe text]

[brief sentence of CW]

[the CW'd bit]

ralesk,

@patterfloof yeah, spoilers and otherwise covered text with "reason" fields would be an interesting tool

Removing five hundred parking places is a good start. https://www.parool.nl/a-b020558d

ralesk,

@th @patterfloof Seen plenty of bike-with-a-big-box-behind-it deliveries in Kyoto — even right on a main road like Gojō. (Even a few couriers on foot, dashing down to a subway :D). Plenty of bike or even motorbike deliveries (not counting food like Foodora/Wolt/etc.) elsewhere too.

That argument from the pro-car people always bothered the heck out of me. There's also things like "no motor vehicles, except trucks between 7 and 9" — there, solved. And special permits for things like furniture. It's absolutely doable while generally making areas human-centered and liveable.

About Amazon's decline in recent months: I have an Amazon account I use ONLY for buying ebooks. Nothing else, ever, going back over a decade.

My recommendations page in that account now contains no ebooks, only products from categories I never purchase, like lawnmowers (I don't have a garden) and dresses (I'm a boring cis male).

I can't actually find any new ebooks I want to read via Amazon recommendations any more. And this seems to be an outcome of deliberate changes? Why would they DO that?

ralesk,

@cstross I absolutely love how the ad industry (and their adjacents) are all about "but we have this amazing algorithm (now with AI™) that tailors the ads Just For You" — and I've literally never seen an ad tailored for me, and as you say, lately it's only gotten worse.

ralesk,

@sidereal @cstross That's also true :D

i need to take our fancy automatic coffee machine apart for cleaning but been procrastinating on it because it's like a day long operation so i bought a little 10€ regular pot to make it in and thats just been fine too. i think this procrastination can go on forever

ralesk,

@miunau I feel like unless you want to do something special (like espresso can pretty much only come out of an espresso machine), any common coffee making device can make you a good coffee with the right beans.

@patterfloof I hate how common that is, especially with new, ever-changing, moving target projects.

k8s, I'm looking right at you.
