Fireworks should not be available for sale to normal people. The only people able to buy fireworks should be people running licensed, official firework shows.

Y’all, you have been able to AirDrop .ipa’s (signed w/ paid developer accounts) onto iOS devices for years now, this is not new “sideloading” in iOS 17 🤦‍♂️

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@d4v @rileytestut Definitely doesn't work with unsigned IPAs. I tried it as soon as I saw that tweet, and the app fails to launch/install, as it's not signed.

Can anyone think of a design pattern that makes it easy and safe to keep the state of child objects in sync with their parent? I.e. when a property is updated on a parent object, the new value should be forwarded to its children.

The naive approach is to override didSet on the parent's property and forward the new value to the children but it’s easy to forget to update the implementation of didSet when new children are introduced.

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @simonnickel Surely it’s not gonna go anywhere, though? It’s just a different means of representing streams of data over time than async/await and observability, and one which might be the better solution for some use cases.

This nonsense is exactly why I’m cancelling my Disney+ subscription. I’m not about to pay £3 more a month for the same content in the same quality I’ve always had. Get fucked, streaming companies.

Baffling that SwiftUI still doesn’t have a public TextViewStyle protocol we can implement!
I know we can kinda implement the _body function, but that feels quite risky…

If Apple has the M3 in all variants ready, I’d be surprised if they didn’t switch the VisionPro to use it. The M2 VisionPro will be kind of a „Developer Transition Kit“ and never be released. But if that is the case, will they announce this today or when the VisionPro launches?

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@gernot I think this makes a lot of sense. I really thought they’d hold back the M3 until after an early 2023 Vision Pro release.

Next time someone tells you that London doesn't produce innovative startups, remind them about Babylon Health, the British Theranos.

It's got all the hits:

  • shitty health tech that didn't work (chatbots!)

  • responsible professionals trying to warn people

  • lack of meaningful regulatory oversight

  • hype from politicians who think iPhone apps, Big Data, and AI are substitutes for training doctors, replacing RAAC in hospital buildings, and other equally unsexy things

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@tommorris the worst thing is, it seemed like their core offering - fast GP access via your smartphone - worked just fine and was making them plenty of £££. Why they felt the need to pivot and focus on this BS is beyond me.

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@tommorris Sure, I agree on everything you’ve said. For them tho, the economics worked out well – it’s the traditional practices that get fucked over. They had a very good thing going… for them. They just decided to pivot towards total nonsense and kill themselves off, right?

Given that the notion that video gets more engagement than blog posts was revealed to be a complete fabrication by Facebook, why is it still seemingly the dominant medium for tutorials and technical content?

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@nicklockwood another related thing that I don’t understand - Instagram has recently pivoted HEAVILY to video lately.

I cannot put into words how irritating the new Test Plan stuff is in Xcode. I literally just want to run the tests associated with this SPM module. Why have I got to make an entirely separate JSON file? Go away!!!!!

    @jsq This year’s entire software release seems far messier than it should have been. Observation is loaded with gotchas (and truly inscrutable code), and there’s that bizarre thing about having to rebind @Bindable values inside a SwiftUI body… Feels like the whole thing needed to cook for another year or so, or building on what we’ve already got instead.

    Is it a requirement to use Apple’s passwords to be able to use Passkeys?

    Thinking of switching from Bitwarden? How do y’all like Apple’s password thing?

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @mikaelacaron no, a colleague of mine uses 1Password, and when generating an Amazon passkey yesterday, it gave the choice of storing it in 1Password.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @mikaelacaron FWIW though, I have no issues with iCloud Passwords. It all works very well, in my experience, and even now allows for sharing passwords easily.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @tibimac @mikaelacaron Eh, I prefer not paying for it, especially when they’ve clearly pivoted away from catering to the average Joe and more for enterprise.

    Getting rid of phenylephrine is a very good thing - it’s totally useless. But pharmacies should be getting rid of far more than just bogus pharmaceuticals. Homeopathic “remedies” are still on shelves, despite evidence they don’t work.

    There’s got to be at least some red meat in the Apple event for them to do an Apple event, right? Otherwise why not just do press releases. That’s the only thing that makes me think it’s perhaps more than the most basic M2 spec bump for the iMac (which is weird - why now of all times, other than to stop making the M1?)

    Scary Fast better mean new Pro/Ultra/DoubleUltra chips or I suspect the EU is going to fine Apple for misleading advertising.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @paul It’s surely gotta be more than an M2 (and M2 Pro?) update for the iMac. They did that via PR for the Mini, and it wouldn’t even be a new chip this time!

    I don't care if it's more "technically correct", Counter-Strike 2 hitreg is so much worse because it's so much more inconsistent.
