“Sunak began to talk about his plan. He has a plan. Labour doesn't have a plan. Trust the plan. Don't go back to step one. But he was, quite literally, a man outside, in the rain, without an umbrella. He was the visual representation of someone who did not have a plan. Then the music began”.

Your friendly reminder that criticizing iPadOS does NOT mean:

  • "dual-boot macOS"
  • "put macOS on iPads"
  • "you want to turn an iPad into a Mac"

It's completely fair to ask for more from iPadOS while keeping it iPadOS.

Anything else is a distraction. Do not let those distractions invalidate your opinion. But expect more and more over the next few days.

These new iPads Pro are clearly the best iPads ever made, and most powerful hardware in this form factor by a long shot.

Which is why it pains me that the most excitement I can drum up is an exasperated sigh

I spent a long time experimenting with AI before finally writing about it in depth. It can be pretty useful — but is it worth it?

When I boil it down, I find my feelings about AI are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains.

App Store rules in the EU painfully slowly working their way towards what should have been a revised position some time ago. Web Distribution has some big caveats: the Core Tech Fee and a dev having an app with >1m first annual installs on iOS and within the EU. But 1) it’s a start, and 2) I strongly suspect the EU is going to take some of those rules and yeet them into the Atlantic.

davewoodx,
@davewoodx@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell The funny thing here is that for nearly 2 decades, Apple has driven the cost of apps down to pretty much zero. Normal users don't want to pay for apps, and expect them to all be free. But now Apple wants to charge developers €0.50 per install!

Oh look, more spam sent to my server from Google's Gmail servers, complete with valid DKIM.

This is your reminder that all of the "anti-spam" stuff that Google uses as an excuse to deny inbound email to Gmail users is actually just anti-competitive nonsense that does not work. They're the largest source of spam themselves. The call is coming from inside the house.

“Should [the EC] suspect an infringement of the DMA, it can open proceedings to investigate the potential breach. […] can impose fines of up to 10% of the company's total worldwide turnover, […] 20% in case of repeated infringement. Moreover, in case of systematic infringements, […] additional remedies such as obliging a gatekeeper to sell a business or parts of it or banning the gatekeeper from acquisitions of additional services related to the systemic non-compliance.”

The path that Apple is currently on, should nothing of consequence change, leads directly to the E.C. forcing Apple to split the App Store (in Europe) off into a separate company, alongside a $80+B fine and heavy regulatory scrutiny. Let's not be surprised if that's where Apple is in 5 years time

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

"Apple said one of the reasons they terminated [Epic’s] developer account only a few weeks after approving it was because we publicly criticized their proposed DMA compliance plan”

It is time for Apple's App Store leadership to go.

I am in love with this scammy mess. The AI generated promo images on the website offering "catgacating live performances" and "a pasadise of sweet teats" are superbly over-the-top.

In an entrepreneurial society, for the cost of a domain name, a limited company registration, and an AI image generator, you too can make a shitty low-rent British version of the Fyre Festival where kids get a sad-looking bouncy castle, some Jelly Babies and a swig of lemonade.

The whole DMA situation should have been Apple's cue to take stock of the App Store and how it has failed iPad & Mac. That a tablet or desktop should have the same rules and restrictions as a phone is bonkers. There’s a reason why most of the Mac apps you care about aren't on the App Store, and why Apple still offers a bunch of temporary entitlement exemptions a decade later — the App Store cannot support the richness of a platform like the Mac. Vision is destined to the same fate as iPad

I’d have a modicum of faith in Google’s AI push if a) they didn’t have a long and proud history of killing products when they lose interest, and b) if their email system didn’t make me report the most obvious spam every single day.
