I hated Threads when I was on it, but I think instances blocking it by default is a mistake, and will do more to isolate those instances than anything to harm Meta.
Most people join social media sites to interact with friends - most friends are not techy weirdos who Mastodon appeals to. If there’s an escape hatch we can use to still communicate with them that they’re comfortable with, great!

@ianbetteridge@writing.exchange avatar

One positive from Threads federating: I can follow the people I like on there without ever being exposed to the kind of tedious fuckers who see my posts and replie because some algorithm or other thinks they will "engage" with it.

Whoever decided algorithms were a good idea for social media feeds needs a very stern talking to.

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@ianbetteridge oh absolutely. I hated the vapid shite on that one day I was in Threads. It was actually worse than Twitter.

I was considering writing up that Link's Awakening DX HD but what’s the point: we all knew Nintendo would nuke it. And now they have.

Better to highlight original indie games that often go unnoticed than yet another Nintendo fan game rip that will be nuked.

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux Yeah, I don’t like that Polygon called it out, especially with a knowing “ooh, wonder when Nintendo will kill this?!”. Well, probably imminently now…

If you’re a admin and you’re going to block : you don’t care about the open web.

I said what I said.

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@ThePlant I don’t think the default should be to block Threads. Just strikes me as weird. I hate Meta as much as the rest, but I actually want to be able to interact with friends, and most people aren’t going to join Mastodon after being turned off it (by insular people, in some instances!)

I’ve been using an iPhone since the 3G and the typing experience has literally never been worse. WTF happened with iOS 17??

Attempting to type this toot on iOS 17

rhysmorgan,
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut Yeah, mine seems to have really regressed in iOS 17.1 onwards. 17.0 was an amazing change, but it feels like it’s making the wrong keys so much more larger than they should be.

Does anyone have experience with watchOS toolbars, where a large titled navigation bar seems to grow in height after navigating? If so, is there a fix or is it just broken?

rhysmorgan, to random
@rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

I would really, really like to know why Xcode 15 seems to think

-destination “platform=iOS Simulator,name=iPhone 15 Pro”

is in any way similar to “Any iOS Device”.
The CI I’m running this on has an iPhone 15 Pro simulator, but for some stupid reason, it picks something else.

Software subscriptions were supposed to be the answer to the problem of sustainably funding software development without having to resort to obnoxious growth hacking and enshittification.

But of course it inevitably became yet another way for big companies to screw users out of even more money while continuing the same practices.

It was never going to be a choice between subscriptions OR ads, data harvesting and feature bloat. Now it's ALL of the above.

@lapcatsoftware @nicklockwood I just wish we'd got upgrade pricing on the App Store in the first place, rather than the half-baked hacks involving app bundles and subscription pricing.
I'm at the point where I'm bailing on as many subscriptions as possible, because they're totally unsustainable.

    @jsq I love Bartender. It’s still absolutely the sort of thing that Apple should have Sherlocked the moment they added the notch though.

    If Apple were to do the M3 MacBook Air 15" in some interesting colors, like a wine red, I don't know that I could resist. It's kinda the platonic ideal of a laptop. I would genuinely spring for a Pro or Max version with ProMotion — I have no real interest in the chunky, retro-looking MacBook Pro, but I would take that power in a thin form factor

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith I love my MacBook Pro M1 Max 14”, but my next personal Mac is absolutely going to be a MacBook Air. It’s an incredible device.

    I find it fun and very useful to connect my iPhone to a Bluetooth keyboard. Makes for an amazing portable travel setup. But it drives me batty that Cmd-Tab doesn’t work in the iPhone variant of iOS. Feels downright spiteful, to be honest.

    (Would be really cool to add iPadOS’s trackpad cursor support to iPhoneOS too. Why not?)

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @8johnr8 @gruber 100%. This would be a great Pro feature. Hell, even if apps could only run in iPhone mode but you could run multiple, it’d be an improvement on what we have now.

    Does anyone have any ideas why contentShape might not be working for hit testing on watchOS?

    I've got a view in a Button, with no background, and if you tap on an empty space on the button, it doesn't actually tap. I've added contentShape(.rect) and it still doesn't work.

    It's fascinating looking at the pattern of acquisitions for the big tech companies. Apple has a mix of hardware and software, but they always work together to meet its requirements. Microsoft: either B2B software or gaming (which is where it matters in the consumer space).

    Google: Hardware! Software! Analytics! How about some adtech? BUY ALL THE THINGS!

    Google's acquisitions look a lot like those people who sit at home watching shopping channels, buying random stuff all day.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @ianbetteridge Also, they sometimes play around with their acquisitions for a bit, before getting bored and letting them rot, then killing them off.

    The British government should be doing everything it can to prevent people from going to Turkey for cosmetic surgery, because they inevitably end up botched, septic, and maybe even dead. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-67474230

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    That should absolutely include bans on advertising cosmetic surgery on Instagram. The government need to be working with Meta to massively reduce the exposure people get to those kinds of ads from unbelievably dodgy clinics in Turkey offering all kinds of cosmetic surgeries from butchers.

    Does anyone know what, if anything, the "Block Sender" functionality in Mail.app actually does?
    It still seems to allow their emails to come through to me, even if it's still just to the Junk folder.

    Tired of the excuses, of the nonsense from Apple trying to explain how 8GB is equivalent to 16GB. It’s just not good enough in 2023. Macs should come with 16GB of RAM, standard, across the line - but especially on a “Pro” Mac. https://www.macrumors.com/2023/11/10/8gb-ram-in-m3-macbook-pro-proves-the-bottleneck/

    Of all the ludicrous features Apple have added to macOS lately, video wallpaper might be the worst.

    If you don't know, the new default screensaver/lock-screen is a slow, high-resolution video of a landscape, and when you unlock the computer, the video becomes your desktop wallpaper. It then slows to a pause after a second or so because even Apple aren't that unhinged.

    I'm sure this is very slick if you have a very powerful computer and don't plan to run any other software but in my experience it seems like a lot of system resources being poured into an honestly not very good effect and like, it's not bad necessarily but I feel like it belies some... strange priorities.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @andrewt Idk, I quite like it lol. It works very well on anything with Apple Silicon, and easily configurable by changing wallpaper.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @andrewt Oh yeah, I strongly disagree with them actually making that change by default. They could have had it as a screen as part of the first-launch behaviour.

    Over the summer I didn't have time to do a proper watchOS 10 redesign for Pedometer++. I am now tackling that project, which is actually much easier now that I've actually lived with watchOS 10's redesign for several months.

    Something I found super helpful was to take a screenshot of every screen in the app and lay out the current UI hierarchy, which when I see it laid out like this is a bit of a mess. But I couldn't tell how much of a mess without the perspective of seeing it all at once.

    rhysmorgan,
    @rhysmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

    @_Davidsmith Ah, do you have the link for that table by any chance? Would love to share with the designers at my work!

    @paul I can reliably get my 14” M1 Max or my work-provided 14” M2 Max to start its fans by compiling certain projects. In Xcode, of course.
