rm_dash_r_star,

Bad news for me, I use youtube a lot with an adblocker and it’s essentially ad-free. It’s going to be a bad day for me when they start cracking down. It doesn’t surprise me, but it’s a bummer.

I’m responding from lemmyonline.com because I can’t see this post signed into lemm.ee. Anyway the presentation is fantastic now, looks beautiful. Problem is I’m missing posts. A couple things are fixed that were broke by 0.18.0 so that’s great to see. If it weren’t for the missing posts, this release would be a winner. It’s a release candidate so no surprise there’s issues, but it’s looking like the official 0.18.1 release is going to be golden.

BTW, I logged out, cleared my browser cache, and logged back in to check no issues due to stale data.

rm_dash_r_star,

There’s a couple reasons why I use subtitles all time. Firstly I’m getting older and can’t hear as well with background noise. If my wife is banging around in the kitchen I can’t hear dialog from the TV. With subtitles on I don’t have to mess with the volume.

Another issue is media producers (TV and film) have this idea they need to blast you out of your chair with sound effects and music. So if you turn up the volume enough to hear the dialog clearly, you’re going to get blasted by everything else. Trying to manage that with the volume control is damn near impossible. Interestingly I’ve noticed “dialog boost” appear on occasion in sound track options from my streaming provider. I use it when the option is there. That kind of indicates a global problem.

An issue related to sound leveling is actors used to come out of theater where they learned to annunciate loudly and clearly. It seems actors don’t get proper stage training anymore and now it’s okay to mumble and fail to annunciate. A decent director should never allow that.

rm_dash_r_star,

I have yet to call myself a lemming as a lemmy user, but I have no objection. It’s kind of satirical and amusing because in the USA when you call someone a lemming, it means they’re part of the normie crowd, i.e. going to the public pool with all the lemmings or going to the lake on labor day with all the lemmings. We’re doing the opposite here. We are definitely not the lemmings, they’re on corporate social media.

rm_dash_r_star,

That’s a good indicator when you find your instance blocked by a lot of other instances. I think the lesson is don’t leave low hanging fruit out there.

It actually amazes me there’s people out there doing these bot infestations. I mean there is some effort involved. Why go to all the trouble, what’s the payoff? And how are they able to find new unadvertised instances so quickly.

Well kbin and Lemmy serve the same platform ideology. Everyone should try both. I think Lemmy has a somewhat better interface, but plenty feel kbin does a better job. Not that Lemmy and kbin are ideal, but keep in mind they’re both relatively new and in highly active development so improvements will come fast.

    rm_dash_r_star,

Usually it takes a pretty big project to warrant a foundation, think like FreeBSD or Apache. Kbin is still pretty small. They’ve grown a lot recently like Lemmy, but not near as big. They don’t have big development expenses since the project host is free and the developers are all volunteers. I think the devs are running kbin.social as well so that’s probably where more of the expense is incurred. Still I’m sure donations are a help even though the project is not particularly expensive.

Will there really be a big influx of users on the 30th?

I’ve seen many comments and posts regarding the API fiasco on Reddit, with the claim that there will be a huge influx of users when that happens. I’m all for it, but I find it hard to believe that the average or even above average user will make the effort to switch.

    rm_dash_r_star,

I think many are simply not doing anything until they have to. Once their app quits working, they’ll make a change at that time. Of course not everyone uses Mobile. Personally I don’t use mobile much for internet access, mainly desktop browser. In that case I could keep using Reddit same as before, but I don’t want to.

So the question is what portion of Reddit users are on mobile, how many will relent to the Reddit app, how many will quit using Reddit altogether, how many will look for an alternative, and finally how many will land on Lemmy or Kbin. Could be a lot, could be not many. We’ll find out pretty soon here.

For those that do come this way they’ll have a transition phase. There’s a lot that’s different here and takes some getting used to. Also the lack of certain features may result in some angst. There’s bugs too. They fixed some stuff with 0.18.0, but searching for and subscribing to communities is giving me fits now.

Can you become clumsier over time?

Is it possible to start out at, let's say, 20 years and be sharp as a knife. Never forgetting things, never dropping things, always have an answer ready and can do multiple things at once. And then around 30 you suddenly drop stuff you have in your hands, you forget if you locked the door, your contactlenses have gone missing...

    rm_dash_r_star,

From a sexagenarian with no health issues, I really noticed some degradation in acuity around 40. I have a lot less now. There’s stuff I just can’t do anymore. It’s fun getting old.
