@apt Hi fella. Know you collect all kinds of hardware. Got a mate in Scotland who has an Amiga 1200 he’s looking to move on. Is it something you’d be interested in knowing more about?

rob,

@apt I’m visiting him in Scotland so can bring with me to the Republic of Yorkshire.

rob,

@apt No problem fella - I suspected that's how it would fall, but didn't want to decide for you. :-)

I’m considered a legit snack in the mosquito world 🦟😎

rob,

@christian I’m travelling abroad and I’m surprised not to have been eaten yet. Usually I’m feasted upon.

In Belgium last year, on the first night, over 90 bites and that was from an open window whilst I slept (due to heat).

Hope they don’t swell up. If they do, then pure ethanol on a cotton wool pad and leave it on the bite for five mins or so a few times a day.

rob,

@christian Yeah. I was a human dot to dot. We went out and bought fans and those electric blue light zappers the second day. None of the small units either. Talking kebab shop size zappers! A morsel of joy forms inside me each time I hear a blood sucker fry. :-)

Got email about YouTube premium price increase.

Claims it will help them support creators. Give it a rest if you did that they wouldn’t have to reply on sponsorships

rob,

@bengillam Do you have personal or family premium? Either which way, it’s much cheaper when you subscribe via Argentina. The price rise was negligible after currency conversion.

I’m starting to think I must get special magic builds of @1password . Keep seeing people whine that they always have problems. But for me It’s rock solid on all my platforms. Even windows and has been throughout. Really don’t get it.

rob,

@bengillam You aren’t alone. Don’t know what the fuss is about. Mine has been solid too. @1password

Tough work week felt like a sinking ship but managed to turn things around right at the dead! I need endless coffee ☕️, or a keg 🛢️!!

rob,

@habibcham I’ve been off for about three weeks. Maybe more. Opened Ivory and have been scrolling through my historical time line. Was very amused when I saw this toot - I’m doing exactly what you’ve described!

So I swapped out the M.2 sata SSD on my Intel NUC running Batocera and now the integrated Wifi and Bluetooth is no more. no longer detected in Batocera on in a live linux image. How does this happen? 🤷‍♂️

rob,

@apt Not heard of Batocera. Might try installing it on an old Mac Mini that’s gathering dust.

Did you sort your issue?

rob,

@apt Thays a shame. How old is the NUC?

rob,

@bengillam You liking it? Would you recommend?

rob,

@bengillam I’ve been caught out by that before. I know it’s how TV used to be, but I prefer to have the option of watch some or all episodes when it suits me! I’ll add it to my list on Trakt.

Quick personal update. My mum died peacefully last night after a short illness that began in the week.

If you’re waiting for me to get back to you etc, that’s why and I’m sorry - I’ll try and get to you in the next couple of days.

rob,

@oliverhaslam Sorry to hear that fella. There are no words, and whilst I’ve lost my own Mum I know that my circumstances can’t be compared to yours; I wouldn’t try to. I hope you’ve got good support around you and can take as much or as little as you want or need from that. Take care of yourself.

Anyone have any good suggestions for Apple Pencil stylus apps? I’ve got a Logitech crayon and been messing around with Procreate, curious if there are any other good stand out apps that work well with them

rob,

@bengillam I can’t draw so I could recommend some colouring in apps I’ve used before. Not sure that’s what you wanted so boosting your ask instead!

rob,

@bengillam Lake was always very popular in our household. Not free for all their content, but I seem to remember we had it for a year at some point and it had family sharing of the purchase.

Spent hours unpicking DNS issues with my Dad’s home network since a move of ISP and enabling IPv6.

He seems to be operational now. Very weird since he has the same setup as me other than a) his Synology is a teeny bit older and a different model and b) he has one type of Netgear switches versus my newer type.

My setup works fine with IPv6 on all devices. His had Synology resolution problems (with Synology services) and Amazon fire sticks didn’t want to work unless wireless (they are usually wired).

Out of brain power to keep digging. Have found others with the same Synology issues.

Glastonbury:

What song is this meant to be?
Hurray I recognise the song. Oh the singer is murdering it.
Singing out of tune
Shouting at the mic
Jumping up and down so you hear one word in 3.
Singing with their mouth nearly shut so you need subtitles.
Sounding like Vic Reeves is singing your song. Yes Elton. That's you. Vic would do it better.

Is the monitoring and mixing at Glastonbury really poor or are too many artists just crap live?

I am my Dad watching top of the pops.

rob,

@serichards I saw Elton in Manchester recently. Was part of his farewell tour and the first time I’d seen him live. Was awful, and I used a similar comparison to Vic Reeves on Shooting Stars to describe how Elton often sounded that night. He’s another of the artistes that should have retired several years ago.

Seems that I was worried for no reason…

  • Old broadband was disconnected at 01:30 hrs
  • My router failed over to backup WAN
  • New broadband activated minutes later
  • Over my breakfast cereal (07:00) I setup the new WAN PPPoE details
  • Two minutes later we were operational on our primary WAN

Thanks PlusNet Business for years of cracking service. Sorry you’re shutting down.

Now if BT can hurry up with the FTTP rollout…

Looks like @fastmail is a no go. They won’t let me register a trial account as I’ve used my phone number previously, Support won’t remove my phone number so I can sign up again and I’ve no idea what address I’ve registered in the past as a trial. If it’s this hard to just sign up I think I’m glad to pass from the start.

rob,

@andyn I seem to recall you’ve been using iCloud mail for the last x years. I’ve been Exchange Online for family (six accounts) and would dearly love to move to Proton Mail, but I have too many vanity domains. Have you considered them for your needs since privacy focused and top security?

rob,

@andyn I’m a long term user of 1Password and have had 1Password for Families since they launched it. Interested to see how Apple are approaching iCloud Keychain but for families too in iOS 17 onward. Didn’t see Proton Pass enter the identity arena. Be interested to hear of your experiences with Proton Mail as you progress. I am considering them for a VPN and mail provider (replacing Exchange online and Mullvad)

rob, to random

Shifting broadband provider tomorrow. I have no idea when my current service will end and the new one become operational. Just got to wait for the Internet to stop.

Not my choice - the provider I have is shutting down, so being forced to migrate. Keeping with the business FTTC, and at least with the provider I’m going to I can, in contract, shift to FTTP as soon as our remote location finally gets upgraded.

Am finally saying goodbye to having a landline phone too. Haven’t used it in years, so not paying for that option. Going digital only.

It’s been three years (give or take a couple of weeks) since Netgear released a firmware update for my network switches.

The S8000 (GS808E) was meant to usher in a flagship low latency and gamer friendly switch. Can’t help but feel Netgear abandoned it shortly after it shipped.

Wondering if it’s time to replace the four 8 port switches I have dotted around our home. But with what? I use a Gold in router mode, and eeros for Wi-Fi (they replaced units that were also poorly supported).

https://www.netgear.com/business/wired/switches/plus/gs808e/

rob,

@bazurk Sorry for the late reply. Was travelling and on a social media break whilst doing so.

I hope your FWG has arrived and you’ve got set up? Hopefully in router mode too?

I have one FWG at home, then a Purple I take travelling with me.

The purple has been connected to our Airbnb internet via Ethernet, and I’ve put a GL-Net Beryl travel wifi box on the other side of it. Fabulous for routing internet via home (site to site Wireguard VPN) or just general protection of family internet from any potential sniffing locally.

The FWG at home works brilliantly. Haven’t gone full VLAN network segmentation yet but we do have group of devices with different rules. Am using DoH with my NextDNS premium as the upstream resolver.

I have another FWG at my Dad’s. We have a site to site VPN in place that works well for our Synology NAS boxes to talk to one another and do backups. Also have Plex servers in both locations.

I then manage two charity installs. One for Scouts and another for a community radio station that my Dad is the Technical Lead for.

Dad has a Purple that he uses for outside broadcast connections back to the station, again via site to site vpn.

rob,

@bazurk It’s all very easy and simple to manage. That’s what I like about them. As I’ve got older I want to spend less time maintaining and experimenting, and more time on functional usage or just other stuff. Firewalla give me this.

I did look at their MSP function but I found it prohibitively expensive to manage the boxes I do, so rely on the app on iOS, iPadOS or macOS.

How are you getting on and did you have any questions?
