Should I make coding videos on YouTube?

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@cferdinandi I'd watch! There's not too many folks I actually enjoy watching on YouTube for coding (A bit too many tech bros) but I know I'd jam with your content.

What kind of code? HTML, JavaScript or something else?

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@mattwilcox @cferdinandi

Ah yeah good point here - I'd also like to add if you could share the code we're watching you write (GitHub or Codepen, anything) - it makes reviewing/practicing it a lot easier and can be followed in our own pace.

@jake4480 40!? ouch, yep you win - ours is two highs this week then it eases up a bit - but I'm sure will get 40's once we push into Summer. Not looking forward to that at all :(

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@mykhaylo eh I'd rather not as it's a whole bunch of alt-text to write for it - but I can tell you it stays near 30°C until the start of next week, before another dropping 4-5°C, which is good 😮‍💨

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Ah yeah there's plenty of beauty wrapped around the summer, but it's just too hot for us at times 🫠

We're actually planning to move into Northern Sweden in the coming years so we'll be trading hot summers for freezing winters and low-light 😅 We'll still push 30 during the summer there though.

I hear north Portugal gets snow during winter season, yet to see it firsthand though. Folks can even ski.

Ah so cool you live in the desert! Great for stargazing right?

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Aha naw, We actually watch a couple on YouTube who moved to North Sweden and the guy is from Texas 🇺🇸 :) They're too far north for us though, it's basically bordering Finland lol - but hey, the property prices were AMAZING so I can see the appeal.

That's really cool that you can access low-light pollution easily. We're in the countryside here in Portugal so I'm definitely seeing more stars than I used to living in a UK city, but I'd love -even less- light.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 They bought theirs for around $15k? - and we're looking at a similar price range when we will want to go.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saN3mNdJerA&t=7s

At that price you can get a nice size, often more than one building (Very common for there to be extra building on the land), and even a chunk of land. Though, at that price there will be renovations to do 100%. But we're kind of looking forward to that?

Absolutely can get some gems too where the house might not need much work for an amazing price.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480

I was raised in the UK, where the house prices went to shit. 60k house now worth 300k+ and crazy stuff like that. Amazing for folks that bought it 30 years ago sure, but I can't get into the housing market like that lol.

If you had less than that initial price for remote Sweden?

🤯

https://www.hemnet.se/bostader?price_max=400000&item_types%5B%5D=villa&expand_locations=50000&location_ids%5B%5D=18026

So yep, that's our dream lol. Sorry for the spam and walls of text 😅

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Ah the 1.5 hour commute hurts :( but yeah house prices are too, too high - hey, maybe if we just stop having avocado toast, right?

I wish you good fortune so you can reach Paradise Valley 😊

Was watching some YouTube before on the TV and it started to sporadically flick to a dark screen, the UI elements from the YouTube App also went with that, so that rules out the video itself.

It was so sporadic though we've yet to determine what it is... YouTube app? HDMI Cable? Apple TV? the TV itself!?

For the sake of €€€, I hope it's just the app or very most the HDMI cable failing 😬

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@cynblogger Will have to give it try later if we notice it again, We've not noticed problems like this before but it has been prone to freezing at times or just not loading anything.

I'm taking a bit more time with my #11ty starter kit upgrade.

Along with moving away from SASS/SCSS, I have decided to learn and lean into the CUBE CSS methodology once and for all 💪

I keep seeing it pop up from developers I admire and now would be a perfect time to give it a spin.

Not sure if I'll also delve into design tokens just yet 👀 but maybe.

Wow the new QR code maker in Affinity designer builds the shape as a vector and changes as you type in the URL or whatever you are pointing it at.

Which means you can do silly things like this!

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@simoncox Really neat tool they've added, saves me having to find a website to do it for free 🥳

Does anyone actually drag and drop files to upload them on a web page? I think the button is much easier to use

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@joelanman Sometimes yes, because I have already the Finder window off to the side and I might be in the right location for the file I need to upload. If I'm not then I'll use the buttons to avoid leaving my current Finder position.

Some things you only remember about an old home country when you return. In this case, the UK:

  • Toilet paper is too soft & falls apart easily.
  • Softened water makes washing soap off take ages.
  • Everything indoors is a little more moist.
  • Hiya/seeya!
  • Separate hot & cold taps.
  • Levers on toilet cisterns.
christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw Don't forget the chavs and roadmen innit.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw Aha yeah I suppose that's kind of universal. Portugal too.

Hmmm, one thing I do find different is there isn't much of the modded car scene here, so when I return to the UK that's all I hear most nights.

Fast and Furious Milton Keynes Drift 🏎️

Hope you have a splendid time back in the UK :)

Anyone here leant into the idea of a digital garden? Perhaps you tried it and found it wasn't for you? Would love to check some out.

I've become more and more enamored with this idea.

I'd do away with published dates and a chronological list (For the most part, I still need to consider RSS) and I'd remove any pressure that a post needs to be fully finished to post it.

I could tend to the digital garden over time and nurture older, incomplete posts... if I wanted.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Ah nice! Aha yeah weeding out the dead links or remembering to do so might be a pain. Now I'm dreaming up an automated link checker that runs in the build step. I've not even started my digital garden/blog/personal site but already adding complexity 😅

Why have I been sleeping on AVIF!? The site I tested it on isn't particularly image heavy, but turning 1.8 MB .png into 330 KB .avif is just an absolute win. All done on the fly thanks to the 11ty Image Plugin 💚

Enhancing my JavaScript knowledge bit by bit - today with a fun short clip by @cferdinandi and @kevinpowell; explaining var, let, and const - and when/where to use them for declaring a variable.

Still thinking about the porridge I made this morning. It was so so good! 😭

I experimented leaving the oats soaking over night - so when cooked up this morning it became so sooooo creamy.

  • 1 cup Oats
  • 1.5 cup Soy Vanilla Milk
  • .5 cup Oat Milk (Soak them oats in oats)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Handful of golden raisins

We have ours with a spoon of peanut butter in the bowl, but another fav is crushed walnuts, goji berry, and cinnamon.

I'll forever be soaking them overnight from now on! 🥣

I was toying with the idea of sharing stuff for various projects on TikTok (An account for each project where it might make sense to do so)

and... I don't think I can - I get the ick every time I open the the website/app 🤮

Its basically all short video content too which I'm not really sure I want to lean in on (or at least, I haven't found an effective workflow for it yet)

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480

Aha yeah visiting the site is a perilous task 😅

Yikes, the idea that the account can just get shut down for no reason sucks :( Sorry that happened to you.

I just don't know how worth it it could be - but I felt compelled to consider it for my project/business.

These things do take up a whole bunch of time I find, more than I would have imagined.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 They banning everybody 😓 And cool account! I only posted like two things and I don't think I can stomach the site anymore lol
