Well that is cheering. Did think the odious Teflon shit weasel would get away with all of it. Sentencing will be interesting. Gigantic fines or prison time?

Think I need to start planning for a total free software future. Been using Windows 10 for work and because it’s tolerable. Changed to VS Code because it’s a very good lightweight IDE. This spyware has forced me to conclude that have turned evil. I was optimistically naïve to think they might not be, in hindsight. So, must look to changing to Linux Mint everywhere, and getting my setup perfected. (May revisit , if it has a tree view now). As for Apple.. hmm.

serichards,
@serichards@mas.to avatar

@M0CUV

Apple is largely just a bit less evil but if one goes bad then the others follow and nobody is left that's good the consumer is up the wazoo.

The icloud and device integration on mac, iphone and ipad is so good with apple. If there was a linux equivalent I think a lot would shift.

@M0CUV Yes. I had heard about that. It's very weird. I keep forgetting Dropbox even exists.

Has anyone in the UK that is not eligible for the normal Covid boosters actually managed to get a private one done?

Pharmadoctor just doesn't work. The chemists it uses seems to be surprised they're on a list and tell me they aren't doing them, or don't have vaccines, or they'll call back. Then don't. No progress at all.

I've got a rogue tooth and cannot consider getting it sorted without extra vaccination. There doesn't seem to be way via NHS for those with transient need for a booster.

I really have to stop kidding myself that it’s OK for me to eat small amounts of GF dairy chocolate. Even though I found something in Tesco that approximates a Kitkat. Because my body is very much “no way”. Oddly, my insides aren’t fussed. However, I am Rashy McRasherson and itch central half the time afterwards and that is usually regressive over time.

But… chocolate. :(

serichards,
@serichards@mas.to avatar

@craiggrannell Are you ok with vegan chocolate?

serichards,
@serichards@mas.to avatar

@craiggrannell I’m uk too. Sounds like some experimentation is needed. I also wonder if there are ingredients in small amounts that aren’t always listed.

I wonder what an airless tyre does for ride quality? Looks fugly. I wonder how much crap would collect inside it as well.

That GSA that is for sale. A few minor leaks: oil and LHM. It's got electronic ignition which would have been the first change to do if it hadn't. Interior is in poor condition.

The human interface around the steering wheel is crackers but actually kind of good!

So the solutions manual was available as a physical book, but ABEBooks shows this as being available for £230!

I naively thought "I'll send Pearson an email to see if this material is still available!" only to be led into their maze of a website that has no email contact details. Eventually I found some sub-site that had a contact form.. I'll see if I get a response..

@M0CUV Thought I’d found it on academia.edu but nope. Book of similar name but different author.

Literally every day now, mini-G comes home from school and at least one boy will have been an arsehole to her to some degree. She’s 9. But, hey, ‘boys will be boys’.

Last time we mentioned this, we were told she ‘needs to be more resilient’. When we suggested victim blaming wasn’t good, we were told things will get worse at secondary. When we said, OK, what specifically should she do, we were told… she should be more resilient. She was shouting today. The boy just carried on being a dick.

@craiggrannell

I'm a big fan of psychological warfare where possible to get subtle and devious revenge.

The school should be doing more about such behaviour and making sure no pupil is getting away with being unpleasant to other ones.

Our lot got revenge eventually when we were allowed to play hockey against the boys. They were savaged. Some boys thought they were too butch for shin pads. They regretted that very quickly.

I'd be on at the school to get off their arse.

serichards,
@serichards@mas.to avatar

@craiggrannell

The school is being pathetic.

If it's clear intimidation and they are threatening her safety etc then is it actually a police matter?

Are any of the school governors in charge of dealing with bullying etc?

Is there CCTV where any of this behaviour happens to prove what is going on?

I'm over the S660 itch. Watched a video on one and it's a loud little thing.

Now heard a certain Citroen GSA is for sale and that is an interesting rabbit hole. Won't need taxing as it's old enough to be free. Oh, actually no it's an 1986. Rats. But it doesn't have power steering and it has the weird handbrake in the dash not in the floor.

If it's cheap enough I could keep the Beast too...but I'd have to tidy the crap out of the other side of the garage....

Parking apps are shite. The one our council used refused for an entire year to work with my phone. It does now, but the sting is in the exciting surprise extra charge when you pay. I wish councils weren’t so reliant on parking charges to raise revenue in this country.

serichards,
@serichards@mas.to avatar

@craiggrannell @TonyJWells I don’t have small change so an app is loads better. Even places with free parking often force you to get a ticket out of a machine. I find that even more annoying than using an app. If it’s free there’s no need to be making people do that.

Driving engagement - what is it?

Is it having a car that keeps you occupied with noise, gear changes and having to be active to get it along a road?

Is it one that leaves you to get along the road and pay attention to all of your surroundings rather than fussing unduly with the car?

Are you engaged with the operation of the machinery or engaged with the higher level task of driving itself?

Does the higher level driving task include feeling what the car is doing at any time?

Discuss 🙂

£1.35 for a first class stamp? Yikes. I assumed I just hadn’t kept up with price rises, but no: the new second class price (85p) is the same as first class was all the way back in the dim and distant past… of 2022.

@craiggrannell It's such poor value when first class post often takes a week to arrive instead of being next day.

New open source / hardware project idea: a LoRa (868MHz) dog tracker that’s small enough to clip to a dog harness, and a portable receiver that shows map location, heading, tracker telemetry on a web page that it serves out over WiFi. Needed since our dog briefly ran off due to another unleashed dog’s aggressive behaviour - but is safely back with us: could have been disastrously worse.

@M0CUV That’s what I thought but it hasn’t crashed in the last few days. Uptime now 3 weeks 🙂
