Corman has claimed this might be the only movie he ever made that lost money. He thought that while he made a point with the movie, audiences didn’t enjoy it. Which is why he then tried to hide any message within the story itself, while still being entertaining.

Ridley once described this as doing “Texas Chainsaw Massacre in space”, which may be misleading for some, because…that movie isn’t really gory. It’s tension filled. And this movie definitely has that.
