@Kendoyle Honestly, both.

I don't even know how they planned to keep the feral cats quiet long enough.

OK question for game friends.

How do games you play account for throwing a smoke bomb at the party's light source, if at all? This applies for other fog-type effects but it's the clearest example.

As far as I can tell, PF1 simply doesn't, but that's not a surprise given its vision/darkness/light/stealth/invisibility rules.

Actual podcast episode downloaded by me in this year of our lord 2024:

This is episode 11 of 130+ in the podcast so far.

Why are you doing this?

(I'd ask directly but they're not on here)

Things which, growing up in the 1970s, I was led to believe would be more dangerous than they actually have been:

  • flooded gravel pits and quarries
  • quicksand
  • strangers offering me sweets
  • Martin Bormann

Things which ditto ditto less:

  • Nazis (other than Martin Bormann)

Racking my brain trying to recall the name and site of an account I feel I used to read about ten years ago, about which I recall virtually nothing, and which was possibly a dream.

shimminbeg,
@shimminbeg@masto.ai avatar

@DarkestKale I, also…

I have a vague sense of a blog/fiction site and something to do with sci-fi. Also an author's name beginning with A.

You can see why I'm leaning towards dream, right?

@DarkestKale @RogerBW that one I know all too well. I think I'm the only person I worked with that could actually use lookups reliably

@DarkestKale @RogerBW when trying to picture a modern group of amateur investigators, I tend to think about my immediate circle, and what contacts they have.

Contacts should probably be a required part of chargen honestly. No, I don't know much about hermetic magic or water treatment plants, but I can get hold of a friend who does within a day. And conversely, who calls you for favours and what does that drag you into?

@DarkestKale I have been off sick today and I was not kidding about the Avestan.

Will they have any idea whether anything in this handout is plausible? No. Ah, but will the use of semi-authentic linguistics and analysis substantially influence the nature of the scenario? Also no. Nevertheless.

@DarkestKale could you have some kind of index, then run over the thumbnail and check which recogs it's worth sending to for proper scanning? I don't know the tech so this may make no sense. Although I have actually edited papers on image recognition algorithms!

Undoubtedly also an artefact of being middle aged, but I feel like music in cafes and restaurants is excessively loud. Conversion is hard work, and so is concentration. Curious if there's an actual reason for the volume or it's just individual manager choice etc. Does anyone know?

shimminbeg,
@shimminbeg@masto.ai avatar

@RogerBW I enjoy sitting somewhere with soft music and a background hum of conversation. It makes me feel human. Loud music tends to shut me down, as @DarkestKale mentioned. It always did though. I was terrible for parties and clubs, which may explain why I'm researching Avestan grammar to write a plausible handout.

You took Languages (Avestan), yes?

If someone offers you funding to research the military potential of N, the morally correct response is to spend the grant money on a team of assassins to take out those funders.

If we keep doing this long enough perhaps we can stop all this pointless military research and spend money on things that are good and useful.

The old scenario-writing problem of deciding what playable objectives a cult has between "read tome" and "welcome our new extradimensional overlords". What are they doing that's suspicious and why do they think that's something useful to do?

"For some, Britpop was a high point for British guitar music: that time when Blur, Pulp, Suede and Oasis thrilled the world with wit and brio."

First paragraph and also the point when I bailed on this Guardian article. The idea that Oasis ever "…thrilled the world with wit…" is laughable; and they probably think that brio is a ballpoint pen.

shimminbeg,
@shimminbeg@masto.ai avatar

@DarkestKale @BigJackBrass it's also the business approach, borrowing the easy things from successful companies but not e.g. employee loyalty or a feeling of freedom to speak up or decent pay
