Benny Gantz has just resigned.

The media has learned nothing from their flirtations with fascism. They are over-covering the Trump rallies just as they always have.

I honestly don’t know how tech writers like @mmasnick can debunk bullshit tech narratives so often without wanting break something—or actually breaking it. I find it completely exhausting. The minute one stupid non-fact gets squashed, two more trend in its place.

@danwentzel1 But that wasn’t the real reason for the velvet rope. That rationale was just assigned to it by a few tech pundits after the fact. It was because Bluesky was always just a prototype for a much large protocol (ATproto) that needed to scale before it had much capital, and had many kinks to work out. Their miscalculation was not realizing how few people cared about the decentralized concept… who should have.

@rjblaskiewicz I blame “liberal society” for rolling over year after year, no matter how much damage conservatives did, not making much effort to “teach” a better worldview, and the history behind it. They can’t understand what no one has bothered to explain in more than passing.

Every time I sit down and chat with a millennials or zoomers, I am struck by just how little they know about what American society looked like before the great unravelling that began when we elected the Black dude. But also how little they understand why “innovation” came to be a mantra for the Right. It had always been a real thing, until they crushed it. Check out History Channel’s “[Men, Foods, Brands, Megabrands] that built America. Capitalism exploits big ideas. But it’s still creative …

As big media keeps telling us… and telling us… and telling us… and telling us.

I am not a violent person. News producers should be grateful.

My tour through romcoms took me to Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Now there’s a broad compendium of Millennial cliches I’d never seen. But it did have a weird sort of charm. At least now I know why Michael Cera was a thing.

It’s a start, but Trump’s billionaires will soon be spending $20 to $25 million on stamps.

Good morning, Open Social. Welcome to the next daily installment of “Learning to Normalize Fascism.” Today we’ll explore how you can keep your Twitter, and not feel you’re enabling a Fourth Reich, with or without genocide.

LISTEN! If Donald Trump meeting with these billionaires and industrialists is making you queasy, there’s a pretty good historical reason. Americans must wake up and understand that Big media will not tell this story because too many of them are already gearing up to profit from the fascist playbook.

Musk must be laughing his ass off at all those high-minded journalists and publishers who bolted from Twitter, only to now come crawling back because they can’t monetize their shitty products quite like they used to. Aww.

Hey bike ninjas! My adopted Specialized bike has a front wheel that doesn’t center in the fork? I notice this cam-spacer on the side that causes it to be off center by 1/2”? WTF? It can’t be removed? What is this about? Is my only choice a new wheel?

We use the term “journalist” far too casually now. Just because someone calls themselves a journalist, and their bosses call them that when they pen the slop they get paid for, doesn’t actually make then journalists. They’re just writers marketing words.

A corporate journalist with 450 followers writes a piece about how everyone is happily settling back into Twitter, while another with 170,000 followers bitches that he just get get enough traction for his newsletter business. And from these takes are unleashed thousands of rationalizations for why a little fascism might be okay.

It should be clear that Open Social isn’t going to happen quickly, if at all. I continue to believe that its future is tied to institutional, educational, and political users. Journalists are not the culture. In many ways, too many have become the enemy of culture. Twitter made them all into careerists first, journalists and citizens second. We need a well defined path forward, stat.

Once everyone realizes just how powerful a tool Twitter is now for the far right, and every psychopath on the planet, there will be so many rationalizations for it, that 1930s Germany will have a lot of company in the history books. If we have much more history, anyway.

The media can drive narratives so easily, that the worst of the worst can unleash years of setbacks for social media.

@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Now now the narrative will be “Well, everyone is a little fascist these days. Why not use what X provides and just make it our own?” It was so predictable.

Fuck everyone.

This thread is fucking nauseating. To paraphrase Frank Zappa, “Most tech journalism is people who can’t write interviewing people who can’t talk for people who can’t read.”

I fully expected the Twitter migration to fizzle out. The narratives were all defined by a tech press looking for “the next Twitter.” All that did was raise consumer expectations that open social wasn’t ready to meet. Now the one thing that might save journalism is being recast as a “hobbyist” project again.

The good news is, everyone has failed to create safe spaces for journalism and news. So it’s still possible to invent some.

Open social has almost as big a PR problem as the Democratic party. It’s made very little effort to articulate the vision, so the public only sees “failure.”
