Yes.

silence7, to climate in Doctors Must Help Patients Avoid Deadly Heat, CDC Urges

OSHA is the agency with the power to do that via regulation not the CDC. Laws happen because of Congress, not the agencies, though testimony before congress from the CDC might sway some of the Democrats in favor.

In the US voting took us from nowhere to getting a lot (but not yet enough) action.

Virginia has a Democratic majority (though just a majority) at this point. There are parts of the state which don’t, and this is one of them.

There’s an underlying problem which drives this:

  • The general election campaign is expensive
  • Campaign finance law means that there are separate pots of money for before and after the nomination at the convention
  • The very wealthy favor Republicans, which means they tend to have more money in their general election account
  • Having less time between convention and election day means that the dollars-per-day you can spend out of the general election funding is greater
  • This pushes Democrats to try and hold their convention as late as actually possible in order to enable them to match the Republican spend rate during the final weeks of campaigning

The US has particularly weak bribery laws, and the Republicans are generally unwilling to allow prosecution of other Republicans

All I can say is that the modern ones are quieter, use less water and electricity, and have a fast cycle for when you actually need it.

What can I say…memes are often more effective brain worms than news articles.

silence7, to climate in What are the most powerful climate actions you can take? The expert view | Voting tops the list for the world’s leading climate scientists in a year when billions of voters go to the polls

Here’s how it has worked in the US:

In the 1980s we could get a hearing in Congress, but not even a meaningful proposal for action.

Around 2010, we tried cap-and-trade. Passed the house. Would have gotten 36-38 votes in the Senate, so it didn’t get a vote.

In 2021, we actually passed the Inflation Reduction Act. It’s getting us an almost-all-carrots approach to building decarbonization infrastructure.

We’re actually fairly close to the point where we might actually pass more, as we need to.

Because people organized to make it happen.
