silence7, to usa in The FAA reauthorization bill would preserve a future for leaded gas

The FAA approved an unleaded fuel last year which serves all small aircraft designed to run on leaded fuel. It’s in use locally, and it doesn’t destroy those older aircraft, and lets them stop damaging the brains of kids who are exposed to the lead that drifts down from the planes.

So no, there isn’t some magic end-of-life for some aircraft due to this. Instead, refiners will start delivering the new fuel so that they don’t lose their market.

silence7, to climate in Opinion: clueless voters risk returning Donald Trump to the White House

The structure of the US electoral system means that we’re not going to get some third party to the left of the Democrats winning the Presidency any time soon.

Biden’s about as good as we can get right now.

silence7, to memes in When climate damage paralyzed traffic

A lot of engineering was done assuming that rainfall behaved the way it did in the past. That’s not a valid assumption anymore.

silence7, to politics in Trump swindles his followers — again

Early stages of dementia often manifest as falling for scams; a lot of them are designed to find people like that. So if your grandma is repeatedly being taken, you should be talking to her doctor and planning for care, not abandoning her.

For a cabinet member. They generally resign or are fired by the President when crimes are exposed. Which doesn’t make sense when there isn’t a crime.

silence7, to usa in The school bus is disappearing. Welcome to the era of the school pickup line.

Getting people to do that means getting rid of a lot of the high-front SUVs and pickups that pose an extra hazard to the people around them.

silence7, to solarpunk in Electorialism (tempted to vote biden)

The structure of how elections in almost all of the US are conducted, with a plurality determining the winner, means that there’s a huge advantage to choosing to vote for somebody who has a big coalition and whose views are less far from your own than the other big coalition.

Let’s look at three examples:

Example 1:

  • R: 1000 votes
  • D: 1001 votes
  • I/non-vote: 0

Democrat wins

Example 2:

  • R: 1000 votes
  • D: 1000 votes
  • I/non-vote: 1

Election is a tie, with the winner decided by flipping a coin or other game of chance

Example 3:

  • R: 1000 votes
  • D: 999 votes
  • I/non-vote: 2

Republican wins

So long as plurality-take-all is how US elections are run, it makes sense for anybody left-of-center to vote for Biden in the general election.

Getting better policies means not just doing that though, but taking active steps to volunteer for and donate to candidates during primaries, as well as seeking out close house and close senate races in the general election to support Democrats, thereby shifting the balance of power slightly to the left.

silence7, to climate in 'Battle plan': How the US far right would dismantle climate programs

Only thing you can really do is to get involved in stopping them. If you’re in the US, that means looking up close house and senate races. Pick one or two close to you, and then support Democrats running in them with both volunteer time and money.

Leave a bit on the table for supporting Biden as well

silence7, to climate in Louisiana’s coast is sinking. Advocates say the governor is undermining efforts to save it. A new Republican governor is taking aim at the state’s coastal protection agency.

Large parts of the state are uncompacted sediment. It does compress and settle as a result. There are a bunch of things you can do though:

  • Stop extracting and burning fossil fuels to slow sea level rise
  • Stop the oil and gas industry from cutting channels through marshes, which causes them to erode quickly
  • Divert sediment from the Mississippi to wetland restoration, raising land levels
  • Help people move when that’s the best remaining option
silence7, (edited ) to politics in Senate Democrats Open Inquiry Into Trump’s $1 Billion Request of Oil Industry: Committees are seeking information from oil executives about a dinner where the former president proposed a quid pro quo

It was at a political fundraiser; people there are supposed to be US citizens are have a green card (or be working as staff). So it was probably mainly the US oil companies, but they actively cooperate with overseas ones to push up prices.

Edit: I’ll note that in the past, Lukoil executives have gotten US citizenship, and contributed to Trump post-retirement

silence7, to politics in We’re letting Trump distract us from his corrupt, anti-climate agenda | There is a strange, substantive vacuum in this campaign cycle.

Almost all of the local press in swing states failed to cover Trump’s corrupt offer to oil executives.

The problem isn’t “people think something else is important” — it’s mostly that nobody hears about the big issue in the first place because the press is covering other issues.
