I spent an hour and a half today in a room with the boss, defending NoSQL as a concept.

skoranda,

@joe If the data is not relational, it doesn't require a relational database.

New! Manage inside your Bitwarden vault! Use the latest in secure passwordless technologies with the Bitwarden browser extension. Learn more in this blog and by joining the webcast on Nov. 9: https://bitwarden.com/blog/bitwarden-launches-passkey-management/

skoranda,

@bitwarden I know you are excited about passkeys, but I use a physical token for passkeys, and now your browser is hijacking the prompt and I cannot login to my high security sites. Please push a fix to disable passkeys as soon as possible for those that do not want to use your passkeys and want to use other passkeys instead.

I wish I could figure out what is going on with me... I've been in a haze for days, and the sinus issues have returned again, which seem to hit me once or twice a week now for the past few weeks. I just cannot fucking focus right now. Went home at lunch yesterday and slept a few hours. Slept good last night but still semi-exhausts and lack motivation. I just cannot get going like I usually do. So frustrating.

skoranda,

@rasterweb Sleep apnea?

skoranda,

@rasterweb Understood. I used a CPAP for many years until surgical intervention. I have family and friends that more recently have been prescribed CPAP, and I am amazed at their new machines--so much smaller and better in many ways. I hope you can persuade them (win) and get an updated machine ASAP.

If I put a cylindrical thing onto a shaft thing and then spun the cylindrical thing around on the shaft to sand it would you consider the shaft thing a sanding jig?

skoranda,

@rasterweb It's only a jig if it has 3 beats per measure. (Sorry, could not resist.)

This morning's unwanted adventure... I found this little lost pup on my front porch. I have cats, and a fear of dogs, and didn't know wtf to do... My neighbor came to my rescue and has the pooch at her home now warming up and eating some food.

(And yes, we got snow yesterday evening, so doggy was sitting out there shivering!)

Lost dog on my porch.
Lost dog on my porch.

skoranda,

@rasterweb Thanks for following up on the little guy.

About 20 years ago, I got to thinking about how much I missed playing music in the band (because adulthood sucks in that way). This started a whole journey of learning jazz piano as an adult and ultimately performing a set at Chicago's Jazz Showcase with a class I'd been taking.

Flash forward to this evening and I find myself watching my high school kid play on the stage of the Jazz Showcase with his high school jazz ensemble--bringing some kind of closure to a crazy 20 year adventure. Freaky.

skoranda,

@dabeaz I play the tuba in a community band for the same reason--it's just fun. The people in our band range in age from the mid-20s to 80s and many came back to playing after a long break. After one semester they are back in the groove.

Very often 3 millimeters is the correct number of millimeters.

skoranda,

@rasterweb It's the very best millimeter vintage IMHO.

It's a cold day and I wanted a hot coffee but I was not up for the stuff that they keep in the office.

I've never tried alderaan coffee, before. 🤨

skoranda,

@joe I used to drive my daughter to DanceWorks often and stopped at Alderaan now and then. I thought the coffee was pretty good. A few blocks north of Alderaan is also Interval and that is also pretty good from what I recall.

I don't think any science journalists follow me, so please boost if you have any...I would be extremely interested in reading (and paying for) a long-form story that investigates in detail both U Penn and the funding agencies and their failure to support Nobel Laureate Katalin Kariko. Is there any introspection going to happen at all by those who failed her for so long? Who are the scientists today being marginalized?

I think I’m going to Chicago on the train today.

skoranda,

@rasterweb Do you usually take Amtrak or drive to Kenosha and take Metra?

joe, to random

I will find out tomorrow morning if I'm going into surgery tomorrow evening.

Send good vibes ( ... or cat photos ) 😁

skoranda,

@joe Sorry, traveling so I don't have any cat photos at my fingertips, but wishing you the best good vibes. Will be thinking of you.

Over my lunch break, I got to get a little riding in along the oakleaf trail. I couldn't tell if it looks like rain or if it was just Canadian smoke again.

skoranda,

@joe
National Weather Service says it's Canadian wildfire smoke again.

This evening, I rode the over a drawbridge for the first time. That was f****** terrifying. (The metal grating is like wet ice)

skoranda,

@joe Third ward?

F#%k, it's been a long week

skoranda,

@joe Perhaps. But you run a cool Mastodon instance, so there's that.

I remember one of my students was doing a name change and let me know the name on the class roster was different than what we should call him in class...

I saw the name on the roster and thought "That's a cool name!" but the thing is, I wouldn't say that out loud, because who knows what kind of trauma that name might carry for them.

Call people what they asked to be called. Use their preferred name(s), use their preferred pronouns.

skoranda,

@rasterweb It's simple, isn't it?

I got the dog out to the park, after work.

Are there countries in the world that have eliminated mass shootings? (Asking for an entire fucking nation.)

skoranda,

@rasterweb See specifically Australia.
