The world seems so small sometimes.
I bought this "Clampette" at a little knickknack store in Cambridge, MA approaching 20 years ago. I've started thinking about buying a second, and typed in the URL on the back of the card (http://www.highsierramfg.com) to see if they still exist. The site was still live! Scrolling down, I clicked on the "Links" page. Who is the first link on that page, with a review of the Clampette? None other than @rasterweb , who I only "met" on the fediverse in the past year.

@bryan Awesome! I’ve been blogging since 1997 and try really hard not to break URLs… also, found these in one of my camera bags.

Steve Albini died? Holy Fuck!

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

Albini had his ups and downs, wasn't always right, but grew over time... He was a unique individual in many ways, and in recent years I tried to pay attention to what he thought and what he said. He will be missed.

Albini’s greatest achievement may have been his acknowledgment and apology for his previous asshole behavior: https://twitter.com/electricalWSOP/status/1448050174614392832?s=20

That twitter thread shows how a grownup can take accountability for being a dumbass as a young person.

@Jonathanglick @gloriousnoise I've always got admiration for people who recognize their privilege and past poor behavior and try to grow beyond that and try to understand others.

Here's a little tip. If I post something during the day that isn't very funny, try reading it again later when you're under the influence. Works 6 out of 10 times.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@the_etrain Does it also work 3 out of 5 times?

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@the_etrain I dunno, 12 out of 20 people agree with me!

I shot a bunch of portraits with the toy camera a few weeks ago. Everyone got a receipt!

@davepolaschek Oh yeah! If I didn't explain the operation, it's a standard digital camera, take a photo and it saves it to the SD card. You can set it to print right after you take the photo, or not print at all (and then you can choose to print later if you want).

For those portraits I printed right away. Alternately if I am out for a walk or bike ride I snap photos then print when I get home.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@davepolaschek Oh, the photo saved to the SD card is a standard (low quality) digital image. Like from a cheap digicam from 2005 in quality. The magic comes when you print. ;)

I took the day off to clean and organize a section of the basement shop and I’m very pleased with the results! I need to do this more often.

One of the advantages of joining the Fediverse is that I hear about art prompts that I (as a rather asocial type) would otherwise be entirely unaware of, often for things I haven't tried to draw before.

So anyway, apparently May is 'Mermay', where you draw mermaids? Sounds good to me! Let's draw a thing. Hopefully it's a good thing.

Someone said “Everything you know about Cinco de Mayo is wrong” but all I know is that it’s the 5th of May but damn even that is incorrect I guess!

I watched "3 Body Problem" after my cousin (who is into sci-fi) recommended it.

The first episode was difficult to watch due to the extreme violence (had to skip some of it) but after that I really enjoyed the series.

(I tend to wait until I have a work trip planned to binge a series, since travel time and downtime in the evening is good to just chill and watch something.)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

I also watched "Fallout" (another recommendation from my cousin) which I thought was a bit corny at first, but I enjoyed it well enough.

I was not familiar at all with the video game, and worried it would be silly/stupid if it was based on a video game.

Oh, I knew about the Pip-Boy device because I've seen numerous builds on @hackaday over the years but didn't know it was from Fallout.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@timixretroplays I do not remember any violence anywhere near what happens in the beginning of the first episode. (I never watched Game of Thrones.)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@fozztexx @hackaday That link is some retro goodness!

@heavilydoped Oh I loved Silo! Hoping it returns soon.

I had two assumptions in the past.

  1. People who drive for Uber do it because they need extra cash.

  2. People who buy a Tesla have too much cash.

But while in California last week a good number of Uber cars were Teslas.

Can someone make it make sense for me?

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@ailurux Ha! One of our drivers had a bio on their profile that said "It's a car ride, you don't need to know anything about me." which was interesting... She still talked the whole time, mostly about her pets. (She had a dog in the car with her, which I really did not like as I've had many bad experiences with dogs.)

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@Workshopshed Is that a real thing!?

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@chris Gotcha... The cheapest model is nearly four times what my last car cost, but a bit closer to my wife's car in price... and I guess the savings with an EV help out quite a bit.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@Tiempo That was my first thought!

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@makerblock I know one guy who drives and he said he does it for two reasons. The first being money, and the second being metal health... I guess interacting with people and getting to talk to new folks each day was better for him than sitting at home alone.
