Took almost an hour, but I finally won a battle of will and wits against the cat, with the help of the kid. NOW I'm ready for anything today can throw at me

@ricci
Haven't you learned your lesson about starting the day by fucking with Bast and bragging about it?

snorerot13,
@snorerot13@mstdn.social avatar

@ricci
Uh huh. And last time you bragged that you'd bested your cat the earth rent asunder. I dig Wallian hubris, but read the room.

A colleague suggested that I had left -O0 on in a shared Makefile and I felt like I'd run down someone's dog without stopping. Turns out I didn't do it. If I were not barred from doing so, I'd consider a duel.

Google was not very helpful in assisting me in typing μkernel.

@rdviii @elb I generally like your list of influential papers/systems. But I don't really think in terms of systems that way. I think of the ideas. I track ideas through systems and that can be a shorthand for their evolution.

snorerot13,
@snorerot13@mstdn.social avatar

@rdviii @elb Your autocorrect changed Mach to Amoeba. Which is kinda snark, but I do have a point. The big idea I take away from those systems is the μkernel. If we use the idea, we can move right on to the discussion without getting derailed by foggy memories or how bad an idea distributed object models are if that's not the discussion you want to have.

snorerot13,
@snorerot13@mstdn.social avatar

@elb And why stop there? Let's do nano- and exo- while we're down there.

Incidentally, I had always assumed that exo- was just a small SI prefix. Nope. WTF!?

I think that μkernels have some applications. As with everything, where you thunk down those interfaces is the hard part. An IPC per page fault isn't the right place.
@rdviii

snorerot13,
@snorerot13@mstdn.social avatar

@rdviii
And those pagers are another example of how systems can be too vague. There's a group of Mach papers that are all about optimizing IPC by (ab)using the paging system. But if those kind of contortions are necessary for performance, it undercuts your distributed μkernel aspirations.

I think Amoeba just took the networking hit and now we have μservices.

Plan 9 is the most obscure system in Rod's post I've used as a daily driver and I'm generally a fan. As you say, lots of those ideas made it into the wild and I also think you're right that it felt similar enough to Unix to make it a hard sell to devs.

The UI difference does not surprise me. When I was introduced to him, he assumed I used emacs and that this was not a feature.

I did like sam quite a bit, though at the time mouse use was pretty much mandatory. Not my favorite feature of an editor.

PSA: if you use gnu textutils sort with -k and -n and it doesn't find a number, it sorts the entire line instead of the selected key, alphabetically. I haven't checked to see if this is a POSIX thing or not, but ... it sucks.

One job of aTA is to learn hard lessons by doing foolish things. As Allman once put it "then everything went black".
