Like 20 years ago, I went to a talk given by a Famous Linguist (i know, shut up).

It was widely attended by the University and other general public. "FAMOUS LINGUIST COMES TO [My BigCity University]"

The talk was terrible.

His description of Linguistics was farcically bad. He was manifestly being a moron & every linguist there thought so. In fact, within Linguistics, the talk hurt his career significantly.

Afterwards, I went out to lunch with a highly-respected Semanticist. I bitched about said talk (because, I mean, look at my feed).

His response: "It was a popular talk."

You see, when given the chance at fame and general recognition, a very intelligent expert may suddenly produce bad/wrong/stupid stuff. They know they're doing it. They want to be famous SO bad. SO bad. SO SO BAD. It's ALMOST WITHIN REACH YOU MOTHERFUCKERS.

They may become a complete baboon, in fact.

This is part of why I'm not at all swayed by someone's "Expert" status in Virology or Immunology.

I've seen people way more respected, way higher up the chain, way more important sell their souls for a lot less, kid.

That previous body of work often means NOTHING when Media Recognition and Public Attention comes into the picture.

btw Neys has some random rotting ships you can hike by.

There are a lot of shipwrecks along the coast. Some you can see from shore, some you can hike right through, some you have to paddle out a bit to see.

There's a nice shipwreck here, for example. But you have to drive about 40km into the wilderness or hike the coastal trail to see it.

Stats: The sun has risen on 100% of days so far.

Model: The sun "rises" because the earth spins on its axis, bringing the sun into view and then turning away from it.

Situation: Sun does not rise tomorrow.

Stats: Welp that's odd. Has always risen before oh well who knows.

Model: The earth must've stopped spinning.

Only one approach makes a prediction. Only one approach can lead to Knowledge.

The "Mildness" hypothesis (Novelty=Severity) is primarily based on a belief about why disease exterminated so many Indigenous North Americans after Contact.

tl;dr I don't think disease did exterminate people in the way that the popular mind thinks it did.

If you live in a family unit of, say 20 people and 5 of them are able to hunt, and you each average about 1,000 less calories/day than anybody thinks a human being can average, and 2 of those five hunters go down with the "flu" for a week-and-a-half.

Well.

In a tightly inter-dependent system, the loss of even one member can take the entire thing down with it.
