What do companies with fast websites have in common? They all (in my experience) use performance budgets to prevent regressions.

This post has been a long time coming. I did my best to distill all the best practices I've shared at conferences and during countless consultations with companies of all sizes. I hope people find it helpful!

I can't remember the last time I read a novel in one sitting, but Prophet Song by Paul Lynch was impossible to put down. If any book should be made required reading in our current times, it's this one.

@brucelawson Yikes. I can manage one bummer novel roughly every six months, so I'll look that one up in the fall.

I'm brainstorming topics for a brand-new / conference talk. Tell me, folks... what burning questions/problems would you love to get answers for?

Bonus points for suggestions that are not about INP. 😉

This past weekend:

🧙‍♀️ Paddled in my town’s annual Witches Float
🎭 Saw some amazing local theatre
🧵 Did some funky quilting with a cool gang of local quilters
💩 Learned that I can use bear poo (which currently is in plentiful supply in my yard) to fertilize my garden

Midlife in small towns is fun, y’all.

Giving this very official award to @nhoizey for his time and generosity in (1) reading articles and trying tools, and (2) letting us know about usability issues and typos! Thank you, Nicolas! We appreciate you!

More important INP insights from @cliff, including:

🔵 Only 2/3 mobile sites have "good" INP
🟢 Mobile INP = Android INP
🟡 Mobile INP has an even stronger correlation with bounce rate and conversions than desktop INP

I had such a blast chatting with @tannerhodges on the @catchingup podcast! We talked about things like strapping EEG headsets onto people to learn how we perceive site slowdowns, and how to measure the impact of on and business metrics. Enjoy!

There's more to web performance than page speed. A performant, usable site needs to be:

Seven years since I jumped at the opportunity to work with @zeman and Steve Souders at @speedcurve!

These have been some of the most fun and rewarding years of my career. I've learned so much and have been so lucky to see our little work family grow to include Elena Kay, @cliff, @andydavies, Andy Biggs, @Joseph_Wynn, and @tkadlec. Looking forward to the next seven years – and beyond!

If your site uses consent popups/banners (and it probably does), this post is a must-read. CMPs create huge web performance challenges, such as:

  1. Single point of failure
  2. Mask third-party issues
  3. Identify wrong LCP element
  4. Hurt CLS score
  5. Delay INP
