the obvious LLM feature for iOS 18 is smart auto-deletion of political spam texts. it's like the lowest hanging product fruit of all time.

Falling down a rabbit hole on 1990s “annual reports.” Corporations used to produce these elaborate print materials with progressive design and typography. They evoke a really specific mood. Happily many are archived online.

it bothers me when people give physical meaning to the boundaries of the observable universe, like, that's how wide the universe is, or it's different beyond those bounds. we can't know, but a random chunk centered on earth probably isn't meaningful. it seems more likely to be "tiled" infinitely in all directions, which is comforting in a weird way.

We’re rolling out an improvement to the way Reels show up in Threads feed. On iOS and Android, you’ll start to see a video player directly within Threads posts instead of a link preview. We hope this makes it easier to share and discuss videos on Threads.

it's hard for me to understand why historical people were so obsessed with tea and spices. it just doesn't feel like either one matters very much.

even just contemplating the eclipse makes me want to lie down on the floor in cosmic awe and horror. the thought that our lives and civilization play out on a blob of rock hurtling through infinite space is almost too much to think about. it makes me feel we need to encode consciousness as light (like in a greg egan story) and beam it to other places before something happens.

pianists of threads: how would you play this ornament in the 22nd measure of bach's third invention as written in henle? i love it, but jamming these notes into such a small time and physical space on the keyboard is... hard.

I wish Google Slides would embrace its role as Kirkland Signature Figma and make its creative tools 10% better. Just 10%. I would happily join an unpaid two week design sprint to identify low hanging fruit.

my third and final HDR test post is too dangerous for threads...

there is an app i've been obsessed with for many years (i won't name it here)... i'm convinced that if you made a handful of changes to the core product, it would go from relative obscurity to mass appeal. but you would need to control the company to make the changes (they would be impossible to pitch as a random employee).

did the outlook web client deprecate support for word wrap? now when you paste in content from a doc, the lines just extend forever to the right, like a code editor with word wrap disabled.

in BG3, realized you can teleport to the waypoint things any time 🤦‍♂️ i thought you could only go from portal to portal, not anywhere to portal. wasted so much time trying to find a way out of the dungeon that has like 200 goblins waiting outside the physical exit.

Update on this, I got Windows 11 working. It's slightly better, and there are things I appreciate about Windows, but I can't over its basic weirdness and rough edges... the blurry icons from the early 90s, the "Start Earning" thing in settings??? It feels like wandering around a CompUSA that was abandoned in 1996 then hastily renovated for a pop-up experience.

long list of google assistant features being deprecated. it's painful to imagine the work that went into these.

narrow, brainstorm-style ideas like 'managing your cookbook' pitch well in big tech but are usually useless. the good stuff is more abstract and generic. chatgpt is a decade ahead of google assistant and is just a text box. google itself was just a text box.
