Fun drinking game for the next 9-12 months: take a shot every time a news article uses the phrase "Section 230" or "chilling effect on free speech" -- that way you'll be in the hospital with liver poisoning instead of having to keep up with all the TikTok news and court challenges

@bpettis I assume then that this image is properly licensed? Or is copyright infringement bad only when US corporations do it?

It’s beer o’clock.

And then food. It’s Happy Hour in this train for 1.5 hours after departure. Roasted leg of rabbit with veggies and potato gnocchi (or more like penne if you ask me). Apfelstrudel and vanilla sauce. And views of the Elbe valley. This time having food at my own seat, not in the @diningcar

Bundespolizei walks through train in Bad Schandau. Apparently nobody in First Class looked “suspicious”.

But oh my these Americans a few seats back do love talking and gossiping. Glad that I haven’t come across this talkative fellow passengers earlier in this trip… Maybe they can concentrate on views only if a tour guide tells them what to look at? Nah now I am being mean, maybe they have travelled this route dozens of times.

It feels so weird to just pass through Hamburg Hbf without leaving the train. (On the EuroCity from Prague to Kiel.) We are still perfectly on schedule. Thanks ČD and DB. So much for “German trains are always late”. (OK, so this is a Czech train but it runs most of its route in Germany among German trains.)

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

OK, so I shouldn’t have rejoiced too early. Now we were delayed in Neumünster for some reason and will arrive maybe 10 min late. Thanks, Echte Norden.

Anybody recognise this clock? You can see through the building through the clock face.

It’s this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Most_Sacred_Heart_of_Our_Lord

Very very nice, architecturally. (Not a religious person.)

By the same architect that originally designed that “tea house”, part of Tito’s villa by Lake Bled, now a cafe, that I visited some weeks ago.

The surrounding were being worked on but from the drone one got nice shots.

@jon it’s fun, I had never heard of him previously. But then I happened to read a book (https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/books/last-days-in-old-europe-by-richard-bassett-review-a4041611.html , recommended) where he was mentioned some month ago, and now then I come across his buildings a few times during a month’s travel.

My train from Žilina to Prague arrived four minutes ahead of schedule. Good job, ČD. This hotel room for €47 is very worth its price. Bathtub even. Just a 15 minute walk from the station. Now a quick rest and then some nightlife. (Recommendations, anyone?) Must avoid tourist traps which can be a challenge in Prague.

Tomorrow I will continue to Kiel (as hotels in Hamburg were expensive) (there is a direct train even) and then on to Malmö, night train to Stockholm, and boat to Turku.

@25kV Hotel Royal. (Despite the regal name a smallish hotel.) But prices might be much higher then.

These counters are said to be for “complex” ticket sales, but I am sure the majority of people standing in queue want to buy very plain tickets.

Good morning from Žilina. It is 2 degrees and snowing. As we (sarcastically) say in Finland, May Day weather.

The hotel was very good, spacious room and bathroom. Pleasant breakfast. Close to the station.

Takin local train to Martin as a start. A Škoda EMU from 2021.

My fabulous next train: A breadbox. Sadly without properly openable windows nowadays, though. From Horná Štubňa to Zvolen osobná stanica.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

The line goes mostly through forest or then is there dense shrubbery on the side even when it runs high along a valley slope so it was hard to get any decent photos. But here are some.

I must say that the line between Banská Bystrica and Dolná Štubňa was more impressive. And it is relatively recent line, built just before WW2 (for strategic purposes perhaps). Deep valleys and steep gorges. Would be lovely to cycle or walk along a path following the river down in the gorge. The line from Vrútky south through Horná Štubňa and Kremnica to Zvolen is historically counted as part of a much older (Austria-Hungary times) and longer line, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnstrecke_Salgótarján–Vrútky

I really need to get some book about the history of k.k railways. Recommendations? Doesn’t need to be in English, easy German is OK.
