Good Morning Altona. Fairly boring view from our hotel window. Harbour themed decorations behind the beds. Cheap but reasonable quality hotel, Meininger. Good sized room, excellent water pressure in shower. Maybe 400 m from Altona station.

In ICE 517 to Mannheim, where we change to a TGV to Marseille.

Passing some new apartment buildings with a lovely view of the trains in Altona.

Sigh, my FT subscription is ending, and the renewal price was €319. Attempting to cancel, it went down to €230, but not any further down. That is too much for me now, I think. Will miss it, but oh well. Maybe I’ll start buying the occasional FT Weekend on paper again.

And we are off. Continuing my , now with the wife, for May. Destination is that worst country for Interrail,🇪🇸. Possibly also 🇵🇹, and perhaps ship to 🇮🇪 (and in that case homewards through 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿). Wife didn’t want to take any hiking clothes so I am then only prepared for urban walking and culture, too. (Which kinda makes visiting 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 pointless, sure.)

@sebwilken I have never been to (mainland) Portugal and not to Ireland (the republic) either, so ticking off both on one trip would be nice.

Fascinating article found in a browser tab: How Turkey abolished the caliphate in 1924.

“He spoke to nobody except the Chief of Police, whose duty it was to escort him to the frontier. When, towards midnight, the Simplon-Orient Express arrived with a special reserved coach the Caliph immediately entered the train, saying a few kind words to the officials. The Caliph was very much moved, and several of those present burst into tears.”

“Introducing proper records in the late 19th century reduced by more than two-thirds the number of babies who would eventually seem to reach the age of 110. That suggests that, until recently, seven out of 10 apparent supercentenarians were, in fact, younger than claimed.”

Interesting article about longevity statistics.

A small linguistic observation - I was initially confused by the Polish signage for both 'platform' and 'track' numbers.
Most platforms have 2 tracks !

The British don't distinguish between the two, the Dutch consistently use 'spoor' which is a track - but never talk about platforms.

What can I expect in Italy / Switzerland next week?

(I'm trying to recall what the French do)

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@steely_glint Track numbers are what you will encounter in those countries.

Note that Italian stations often have some tracks terminating at the station, at one or both ends, and these can have overlapping numbers with through tracks, but with a compass direction appended (sud, est, nord, ovest), or tronco (for truncated), or some other madness. Read displays and signage carefully.

Picture: Franzensfeste/Fortezza station where one track is simply known as the binario tronco, truncated track.

Ah. Queues not only for London, but for public transport tickets too 😡

Tip: even if you’re only in Paris once in a while get a Navigo card. Machines to only recharge those have no queues!

@jon I am sure that if I would get one, I would forget to take it with me exactly on those trips where I would end up going to Paris. Still, I probably will get one the next time I am in Paris.

Wow, I did not remember that the Copenhagen S-tog trains are this wide. Might these be the widest passenger trains on standard gauge networks? Or is it just an optical illusion thanks to the interestingly shaped cross-section of the carriages?

It’s warm and sunny here in Copenhagen! Have to roll up my semi-winter coat and put it in the Freitag bag. A bit surprisingly, it turned out to be essential during this April.

Wide and comfy seats in 1st class in this DSB regional train to Helsingør. As I have ample time and the weather is nice, why not spend some more time in trains and do a tour of Sjælland? Will skip Louisiana, though, didn’t seem to be any must-see exhibition going on there.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

Wonder if is still valid on the Helsingør–Helsingborg ferry, even though it isn’t a train ferry any more? Surely not?

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

Haven’t been here in Helsingør in dozens of years. Wonder if one can still see any traces of the train ferry infrastructure.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

This is a track that surely lead to the train ferry ramp.

Helsingør was nice. Could have spent more time. Did not visit the castle.

Now taking a roundabout route back to København H. This local train almost runs along the street, right by the quay.

tml,

This is annoying. This train from Helsingør to Gilleleje continues right away using another train number to Hillerød. But the Rail Planner won’t let me add that as it thinks it overlaps with the arriving train. Oh well, I will just add the next train then instead.

In Schleswig now. The station is sadly pretty far from the city centre. (See attached image where Ihr Standort is the station.)

So, should I take the first train to Copenhagen or wait for the one to which I actually have a reservation? The weather in Copenhagen is possibly better.

How is it again, are reservations mandatory (at the moment, in low season) on the EC train to Copenhagen or not? I don’t remember the staff ever checking reservations.

Fun drinking game for the next 9-12 months: take a shot every time a news article uses the phrase "Section 230" or "chilling effect on free speech" -- that way you'll be in the hospital with liver poisoning instead of having to keep up with all the TikTok news and court challenges

@wandrecanada @mathewi Why do it simply when you can do it in a complicated and mysterious fashion, you mean? Are there really no keyboard layouts for English in Windows that would provide dead diacritics or other trivial and mnemonic way to get common accented letters? Numeric codes are so last century. Sorry.

@jon it’s fun, I had never heard of him previously. But then I happened to read a book (https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/books/last-days-in-old-europe-by-richard-bassett-review-a4041611.html , recommended) where he was mentioned some month ago, and now then I come across his buildings a few times during a month’s travel.
