"The Year of the Linux Desktop" is going to end early when new users end up being insulted on toxic help forums.

@chikorita157 @dopey_kun @fujiwara As someone who daily drove Linux as an OS for the past 4 years; I've had a good time on all of my computers with various distros - Arch, Debian, Fedora, PopOS, etc.

The only main hurdles that I've personally encountered were things that I'd expect an enthusiast to know how to deal with - mainly me switching from NVidia to AMD, and fixing stuff because I fucked up something in my Arch install (a distro I personally wouldn't recommend to casual people anyways, and of which I might move away from if I ever have to re-install for whatever reason). I don't really think its something that an average user might have trouble with (or well, I hope that's the case).

I don't want to deny that there are edge cases, or some weird issues that might pop up, or that it might not be feasible if you rely on commercial apps, or that some people just prefer other OSes and are perfectly happy with what they've got. I feel for people like @yon who encounter issues, and I do one day hope for the day that more commercial apps become viable.

On the other hand, I still can't find myself saying anything else except that I personally think it's easy to use, and stuff just works for the most part, in my experience; especially for the people who just need a web browsing and content consumption machine (which my laptop basically was).

The most work that one should have to put into it is research and realistic expectations. Someone switching to Linux will have to deal with fundamental differences; just like with Windows users switching to MacOS, or vice-versa - doubly so if its something they don't have any prior experience trying out (i.e. Windows users going to schools/libraries with Macs, or vice-versa).

My dad was diagnosed with cancer today and I'm just in disbelief. I know he'll be okay, but I want to know what God thought one parent wasn't enough.

@fujiwara Can only imagine how much this sucks for both your dad and you; all my hopes, thoughts, and prayers are for all of y'all, wishing for nothing but the best ❤️
