@chikorita157@dopey_kun@fujiwara As someone who daily drove Linux as an OS for the past 4 years; I've had a good time on all of my computers with various distros - Arch, Debian, Fedora, PopOS, etc.
The only main hurdles that I've personally encountered were things that I'd expect an enthusiast to know how to deal with - mainly me switching from NVidia to AMD, and fixing stuff because I fucked up something in my Arch install (a distro I personally wouldn't recommend to casual people anyways, and of which I might move away from if I ever have to re-install for whatever reason). I don't really think its something that an average user might have trouble with (or well, I hope that's the case).
I don't want to deny that there are edge cases, or some weird issues that might pop up, or that it might not be feasible if you rely on commercial apps, or that some people just prefer other OSes and are perfectly happy with what they've got. I feel for people like @yon who encounter issues, and I do one day hope for the day that more commercial apps become viable.
On the other hand, I still can't find myself saying anything else except that I personally think it's easy to use, and stuff just works for the most part, in my experience; especially for the people who just need a web browsing and content consumption machine (which my laptop basically was).
The most work that one should have to put into it is research and realistic expectations. Someone switching to Linux will have to deal with fundamental differences; just like with Windows users switching to MacOS, or vice-versa - doubly so if its something they don't have any prior experience trying out (i.e. Windows users going to schools/libraries with Macs, or vice-versa).
@fujiwara Can only imagine how much this sucks for both your dad and you; all my hopes, thoughts, and prayers are for all of y'all, wishing for nothing but the best ❤️
Finally cleaned the corner of my desk, which has the vintage computer corner of the desk, which consists of a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Door from 2022, a Macintosh 8100/100AV, to run older Mac OS games that won't run on Mac OS 9 or run too fast, and a custom Wintel (eww) Pentium III games to run older PC games.
The 8100 restoration is in it's early stages. I have a Wombat ADB to USB adapter to allow the use of a USB KVM switch, which allow me to switch between these three vintage computers seamlessly and switch the source on the monitor. The 8100 now sports an external BlueSCSI to boot from flash media with an AAUI Ethernet adapter to get new software over the network. There is no need to burn discs or use floppy disks to get software on there.
I'm not complete with the 8100 yet, Need to repair some stuff, upgrade it to a Newer Tech G3 Accelerator, and probably max out the RAM.
The custom Pentium III machine is not plugged in yet, need a DVI to HDMI adapter or DVI to Displayport adapter, but it will happen in the future.
I'm using a Sabrent USB peripheral sharing switch to share the keyboard and mouse between all three computers.
@yon@chikorita157 The closest that you can do with a similar layout, especially if you're comfortable with opening up and tinkering with keyboards; you can get the Apple Extended Keyboard II (M3501); they clean up and can be restored rather nicely, and are nice boards to use 👀
@yon@chikorita157 If you mean https://www.flickr.com/photos/number5/6688287471/ keyboard with the really slim bezels often referred to as the "Apple IIgs keyboard", they are "mechanical" keyboards - either using SMK or Alps switches (which one depends on if the keyboard was made in Taiwan for SMK, or Japan for Alps). Both can be great from what I've heard, especially if they're taken care of or if you clean them up and restore them.
The Apple Keyboard II looks somewhat similar, but with slightly thicker bezels.
If your ADB keyboards are full size - Apple Extended Keyboards 1 and 2 are mechanical, Apple Design Keyboards are rubber dome.
does anyone in the #seattle area know how to work on #mechanicalkeyboards? i need help with something on mine and I'm not quite sure I have the know-how to fix it myself
When I said that I wanted work to calm down, I didn't mean I wanted AT&T to have nationwide outages :INTSL_Aqua_panic: well, without internet my job is pointless. Guess it will be an easy day!
I have no idea why my sister, someone who has never watched a full game of football in her life, is messaging me about the Super Bowl, someone who has never watched a full game of football in their life.
Every time I get on YouTube, I just get videos recommended to me about why games I enjoy are bad. Why can't we just ignore the things we don't like and talk about things we do? What an exhausting life.

Sigh, it took me way too long to realize that the bro who wrote 'the book' about finances was essentially a huge hypocrite. It's like all those techbro startup founders whitewashing their histories to hide their privilege.
@anianimalsmoe damn, he couldn't invest in gold silver retro video games crypto then pull out fast enough, sucks to suck and to have skill issues :KannaHeh:
One time I bought a Chika plush off of eBay that had free shipping, and the seller refused to ship it until I paid them $25 through Venmo. I told them no and they responded back with "YOU NEED TO PAY NOW OR YOU WILL NOT GET HER!!!"
I literally had a Chika hostage situation :ChikaPain: luckily eBay refunded me when I provided them screenshots and I bought the plushie elsewhere.
