Does anyone know if it’s possible to modify the LLDB command Xcode runs to connect its debugger to an app? Or at least see what the command is that’s being run? Maybe using an lldbinit file?

cc’ing a few people who might know // @tonyarnold @mikeymikey @justkwin

tonyarnold,

@hisaac @mikeymikey @justkwin I’m not at my Mac, and I don’t know this off the top of my head, but the process listing usually shows arguments and flags, yeah? If it’s a discrete run of lldb that Xcode does, you should be able to see it via ps or top or similar?

this man has obviously never been involved in the process of baking cookies and i feel like in the process he fashioned a metaphor about the hubris of science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crjxpZHv7Hk

@QuietMisdreavus I’m not sure I have the patience to watch that, but are other cookies considered “impure”? 🫣

@QuietMisdreavus hahaha other humans with access to a lab have more time than me. News at eleven.

Now I have to watch it.

They're not just fixing bugs in AppCode. They're actively working on feature requests I filed, new ways to apply "Inline". What the heck.

So like, if I was to announce a major update to one my apps, when would I want to do that? After WWDC right? How much after though?

@mattcomi now-ish capitalises on everyone’s excitement and desire for more info. They’re not going to get anything more beyond rumours for 10 more days.

Had a taxi ride today in a hybrid Camry that was flashing errors on the console saying things like “battery cooling system error”, "stop vehicle" and the like.

I was super glad when that ride was over — doubly so because I had my 9 year old daughter with me.

A few ways to make non-content app subscriptions more ethical and less predatory, some on Apple/Google, some on devs:

  • add a non-renewing option
  • purchase unlocks a certain amount of features forever, not a rental
  • renewing option auto-cancels if inactive for some reasonable time
  • add paid upgrades
  • remind people they're paying in UI

As long as subscriptions take away consent for ongoing payment, app sustainability will always rely at least a little on taking money from people who forget.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@stevestreza @panic @emorydunn we offered this model for Reveal for many years, and for us, it didn’t work. We ended up on “full" subscriptions, and while I don't like it ethically, it has mostly kept us afloat.

Team Reveal is a lot, lot smaller than Panic, though. So is our user base.

Gosh I’d prefer to be offering what Panic is.

Lots of comments recently on my channel from people immediately NOPEing on an app with a subscription.

I'm starting to feel like the App Store wrecked people's expectations for what software they can use with basically zero cost. When everything was like $1-5, you could buy every single cool app that people talked about, and not really feel the pain.

Downside is companies could not sustain themselves on that little revenue, so many didn't make it.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@GeekAndDad @gruber @matt software prices were significantly higher two decades ago. It was possible to sustain an app on far fewer sales.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@GeekAndDad @gruber @matt the "potentially more customers than in the past” really only applies to iOS. It doesn't translate to any of Apple's other platforms, yet they hold them all to the same set of rules.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@helge @GeekAndDad @gruber @matt it's not the exponential explosion of users that iOS saw.

There are more, sure, but not “we'll make money through the deluge of people just passing through" like there is on iOS.

I look in on Twitter occasionally, and it's sad to see some of the great conversations still going on there, but it also usually takes mere seconds to find a thread with the most toxic shit imaginable, with openly fascist, blue-checked shitheads confidently saying the most heinous things without fear of consequences or even contradiction.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim @nicklockwood Bluesky just seems like nonsense for the circle of people I follow. All of them are flipping between shitposting, and complaining about Mastodon in almost equal order.

GitHub seems to have solved their outage last week by just rate limiting the shit out of everything.

None of my caches work, downloading basic workflow plugins is failing.

I don't get the impression that GitHub's in the best state lately.

@danielpunkass Thanks!

Yeah, it's not hitting hard at all. Thankfully, both times we've had COVID it has been relatively mild in my family.

Headaches, fevers and a mild bit of joint pain within the first 12 hours, then just headaches, really. I feel tired, but that's probably just being 40+ and having kids to be honest.

Is there an analogue for DispatchSource in Swift Concurrency, or should I be wrapping that type in a Task?
