> We’ve long had the sense that it’s possible to cultivate an experience on the Internet that is more calm, thoughtful, and introspective. And we’ve long had the view that this is possible not from a technology-oriented approach, but from an approach that is more soft, more personal, and more intuitive.

For any significantly complex and interesting open source project, there’s like 3 or 4 Twitter threads or GitHub issues that you find while researching that will reveal occult-level knowledge about how it works and why and you’ll never be the same after reading.

Just found the one for next.js app router lol https://github.com/vercel/next.js/discussions/54075

A really helpful thing I've been doing recently to keep up with open source libraries is adding their release tags to my RSS reader (@feedbin). Super simple and useful

I saw another person take issue with the term "software engineering" and I think that's fine, but I think we should all call ourselves "computer scientists" instead, because imo that's even more offensive

@aeva need to start calling myself webmaster it goes so hard

Someone needs to make an infographic that shows you how much money you would’ve made if you shorted every company that went public thru a SPAC over covid

Why can you only mark text messages as spam in iOS but not MacOS 😩

Seattle is kinda the LA of the pnw which is why I think I like it so much. There’s definitely a spiritual connection between the 2

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

If you like seattle but don't like LA I have some pointers for you:

  • stay in one of the >20 cool neighborhoods east of the 405 for a few days. dm for recs
  • try to do everything (eat, go out, explore) all within 2 miles of where you're staying, preferably within walking distance

The biggest trap for tourists is staying in an isolated location and driving too much. LA is literally 10x larger than something like SF, and reducing scope while visiting is the key to success

@tvler Thanks for setting up the reset function in Streetpass.

@bitcodavid of course! More features like that coming soon

@tvler Have you considered bringing StreetPass to Safari on iOS? It’d be nice to have it there, because I do most of my browsing on my iPhone.

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@gracjan hi! yes, you can see the ongoing discussion here https://github.com/tvler/streetpass/discussions/36 . feel free to subscribe to that thread for updates. not making any promises since I'm imagining like 100hrs of work for this feature lol

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@gracjan I think if Apple changes Safari sometime in the future so that iOS Safari extension icons can have a permanent presence on the browsers toolbar or something, this would push the feature wayyyy sooner since I wouldn’t need to write an app for the StreetPass UI.

Wow, “Hide after open” is a fantastic idea for StreetPass! Will definitely implement this (along w the ability to manually hide people). Ty @prenagha :) https://mastodon.social/@prenagha/111330198447084058

Kind of wild that chrome webstore submission approvals are now about twice as slow as Apple App Store

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@chris it’s probably just because StreetPass is an extension using the standard Safari extension template but I’m about 12h. Chrome is consistently 24h

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@chris and Firefox is ~2 seconds lol

StreetPass catching the "me" Mastodon link in The Verge's HTML. It's so nice to see such things.

@cellfourteen whoah this must be a super new change to their site! Cool to see

matt, to random

I've been using the StreetPass browser extension for months now, and it's been a simple yet excellent way to quietly discover people I want to follow on the fediverse.

Thank you @tvler for making and maintaining it!

feel like the next version of cablecutting is gonna be people not having phone numbers… huge diminishing returns due to spam takeover, simpler personal tech stack, cheaper, more and more viable over time

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@oldmanspidey I agree w phone numbers still being important now, but they have been becoming less and less important over time. I can totally imagine a younger demographic in a few years carving out a niche lifestyle of hacking around them being needed for legacy institutions. Like… if apple spins up a “hide my phone number” type thing similar to what they do for emails

tvler,
@tvler@mastodon.social avatar

@oldmanspidey on demand data-only e-sim plans + temporary/one off numbers + less institutional requirement for them over time
