I am a feminist and some sort of left anarchist. I like video games, FOSS software, Lord of the Rings, math, and summoning uncountably many demons by digging too deep.

I am not LGBTQ+ but I try to be a good ally. (How’s my driving?)

This article is written so your grandma reposts it to her Facebook page. It’s all right wing pearl clutching:

“McHugh said these extra security measures to prevent thefts will only result in costs getting passed down to shoppers, which would make groceries even more expensive.”

Grocery prices are up because teenagers made some posters!

TBH dudes with foot fetishes assume no one else knows what a foot fetish is, and that’s where they run into trouble. See: Dan Snyder and Nickolodean.

Example:

Dude 1 openly harasses me about my butt, I hate it and move on with my life

Dude 2 thinks he’s being slick. Talks to me for a few minutes bullshitting/smalltalk before the conversation is suddenly about how I’m on my feet all day and what shoes do you wear and what about your socks and… etc

One is a cat call, the other is some weird social engineering shit that also insults my intelligence. I’m not making this up, these dudes try this on multiple targets until they can find a mark. My coworkers have to deal with it too. Don’t see them a lot but we warn each other about the foot guy.

Sorry to all you normal, respectful people with foot fetishes, I’m sure you give awesome consensual foot rubs.

This is an excerpt from my math models textbook. It’s about Lagrange Polynomials which is a technique that lets you fit a polynomial to a set of any number of unique points (x_1,y_1) … (x_n,y_n) so long as all your x-values are different (otherwise it wouldn’t be a function, and couldn’t be a polynomial). The polynomial...

Is there a way to turn animations off?

I’m trying out Mlem (looking for a replacement for Liftoff, I tried memmy already) and these silky smooth transitions are driving me nuts. I’m talking about the way text zips around when collapsing comments, or the way images slide in when clicking a thumbnail. I’d rather turn them off, is there a way to do that in the...

Maybe I’m crazy but the more of these I read the more I feel bad for these people.

It’s like the law is so alien and arbitrary to them, that even when presented with strong evidence that they’re wrong, they can’t see they’ve been deceived. They’d rather live in a world where laws can be invalidated just because they’re unfair or arcane (as long as you know the magic spell of course…).

I kind of sympathize with that: the law IS alien and often arbitrary for us common folk.

Palworld is $30 on steam. It’s a litttle expensive for an indie game but I’ve gotten my money’s worth already. It’s not perfect but I wasn’t expecting a AAA title. Honestly I’m just impressed multiplayer works as well as it does. I also appreciate that they didn’t shoehorn any awful cutscenes in. No story > bad story. It also runs pretty great, even though my computer is older and I’m using proton/linux.

Compare Pokémon scarlet, $70. Laggy. Unpolished. Missing features from previous games. Unskippable cutscenes with characters just standing around talking to each other. Boring basic story. Nothing to do at the end of the game (no battle tower). No new fun features (the open world feels empty and ugly, compare BotW/TotK). It’s too open, there is no Mt Moon to get lost in.

Even if the team makes no further improvements I’m still having fun with palworld. I don’t see myself ever replaying scarlet.

I am not a physicist but this article is about background radiation and the study of it, and they found a lot of gamma radiation in a place they didn’t expect.

As usual, the editor of the article chose a title that could easily make a reader assume “…have they possibly found aliens??” when the truth is the scientists are very excited about needing to revise their understanding of cosmic background radiation. It seems purposable that the article was titled with the word “signal”, when the signal is a natural process, and then doesn’t bother to clarify that there is a near 0% chance this is a sign of intelligent life.

2/10 article, badly explained science writing.

FOSS software demonstrates that one of the suppositions of capitalism - that innovation is primarily driven by profit motive - is incorrect. Humans want to help each other. People want to improve the world even if they’re not paid for it.

welcome to the team, comrade

I get the feeling there’s going to be a lot of comments here from people who disagree.

This is not your instance. This is not even my instance, I am just signed up here (and thank you Ada, I like it here and I approve of this decision. CSAM-like porn is icky). There is no need to focus on the morality of sharing porn that ends up being viewed as CSAM. Hosting porn involves legal risk, and federating with an instance that has porn on it means that eventually you will host porn images. If you have your account here and you don’t like this choice, consider moving instances or hosting your own.

Not only that, does anyone remember /r/jailbait on reddit? They did not do anything about that subreddit because the images were “legal”, but the userbase they attracted began sharing real CSAM in the DMs. To be clear: I don’t know what community we’re talking about (lemmynsfw does not appear to have a jailbait community, I did not look hard) but you do not want the sort of people around that this attracts.
