Assuming said data scraping is a real concern for both Twitter and Reddit, are Fediverse servers at similar risk from scrapers and various automated API hits? I don’t really know enough about networks to answer.
I’m fairly new and don’t 100% understand it yet, but instances are run on servers that require money. Are we heading towards seeing ads or subscriptions to raise funds instead of relying on donations to cover overhead?...
I’m not really clear on the way the networking works with federated systems.
Say that an instance decided to charge a subscription fee, would they then have to defederate from free instances on a cost basis alone? To handle server load for requests from those instances?
Or, say that subscription was sustainable, would there be anything stopping someone from making a free instance to give users full access to that subscription-based content? The answer there is defederation right?
Trying to work out in my head how this system could be scalable without communities becoming walled gardens and thus removing part of the appeal of federation.
Why YSK: Beehaw defederated from Lemmy.World and Sh.itjust.works effectively shadowbanning anyone from those instances. You will not be able to interact with their users or posts.
Yep, they said they intend to federate again once they have access to better tools to help with the bots and stuff. Hopefully with the new influx of tons of people, that will also mean more people working on tools and apps to improve things.
I feel like the cultural/political responses to both global warming and COVID-19 have shaken my faith in this sort-of Watchmen scenario working out. No matter how universal the threat, seems like some groups will always find an angle to work that cuts against the "greater good."
I'm one of the people who has very recently tried Lemmy and decided to drop Reddit. Initially because I will no longer be able to use SyncForReddit, but now also because I just like the vibe a lot more here than Reddit....

Musk is undeniably just trying to run twitter into the ground at this point. (lemmy.world)
So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?

What's your solution to end all wars?
What are your ideas, that if you could implement would likely stop our species from warring so much?...
ELI5: Would it be possible for a "fediverse" app to exist?
By this I mean: something that can view and fully interact with multiple different services like Lemmy, Mastodon, etc....
How should we be using Lemmy? (lemmy.world)

Saw this question over in r/Reddit: “If you could get one more season of a TV show, what show would it be?” | What show(s) would you choose?
