This diagram from a paper on ant sleep is very important. It shows how queen ants in Solenopsis Invicta colonies sleep in plies like puppies.

When they are awake they like to have a bit of distance between them.

Fediverse, I have a slightly unusual request for you. Can you recommend me video games where the main setting is a library, where the main character is a librarian or where the plot revolve heavily around libraries in some way?
Thank you.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@Sylvhem Scarlet Hollow may not be quite what you’re asking for, but one of the characters is a librarian and the library is important to the plot (not just as a generic place, but as a source of historical info).

@mntmn Once I returned a new PC to Dell because it failed to power on and displayed a certain diagnostic LED combination. When the replacement arrived, the same thing happened again. The problem was that my DisplayPort cable connected pin 20 straight through and this was tripping some sort of soft fuse on the motherboard.

Can anyone else here say "the proof of the pudding"? I'd have to say "the proof is in the pudding"

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@amyfou I thought so too, but apparently the saying was originally “the proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

Everything washed in bright neon shades

@onelson I had so many questions about the tequila worm scene when I saw it as a child. Starting with why is there a worm in the bottle.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson Wow, it sounds like that was the plan. 🧐

Has Torchy’s Tacos ever had a taco of the month named “The Grackle”? Just thinking of something Maciej Cegłowski once wrote about how tech companies have a tendency to name products after their worst externalities.

bk1e,

I realize tacos are not tech, but I think any sufficiently advanced taco is also indistinguishable from magic.

Just read a take that “30 years ago we’d have to wait days for pictures of the Aurora”.

I think this is a case of “mysterious old technology mythical tales”.

First of all, digital cameras or the ability to convert analog video to digital stills existed, widely, since the 1980s. For consumers digital cameras were available in 1994.

For film, the fact is that in the 80s/90s there were 1-hour photo places literally everywhere.

Newspapers had photos of current events since the 19th century.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@moftasa @thomasfuchs Here’s a newsreel about it from the 1930’s. I like how they use a coil of string to represent converting each scan line to and from an analog signal. https://youtu.be/cLUD_NGE370

I took these with my iPhone camera between 9:45pm and 10:05pm. The pink glow was only visible in long exposures, not visible to the naked eye. I walked to a darker location and still captured a pink glow, but it was fading.

I assumed the pink glow was lens flare until I saw similar photos posted to r/Austin on Reddit.
