The hysteria over Palestine protests on campus that is being ginned up to protect US support for Israel’s war is the beginning of a new Red Scare. Liberals must resist it, because it will come for them, too.

@QasimRashid apprently erecting tents on university grounds is «violence». A lot of opponents to the protests think that there is only a very specific form of non-disruptive protest that is permissible.

This excellent article by @molly0xfff reminded me of the sci-fi trope where everyone in the future lives in a domed bunker & gets told not to go outside because it's a wasteland filled with Bad People.

Of course the protagonists leave the dome & find that the reality is a bit different: outside can be scary, but it's not the hellscape they were told.

Big Tech walled gardens are the dome; outside them is a risky wonderland that’s ours for the taking.

Leave the dome.

@jordan @angusm @molly0xfff They love the walled gardens just because they don’t know of the alternatives. Sure, the alternatives can be more complex, like driving your own car is harder than taking the bus. But that is basically what they are doing. They are the passengers, not the drivers.

UCLA students at a peaceful encampment were pepper sprayed & beaten, while police stood by & watched.

Students blasted university officials & police for failing to intervene & protect them from pro-Israeli attackers.

"Several students said they had to rely on each other, not the police, for protection as they were attacked."

speaking as a jew, it’s not antisemitic to call for the end of a genocide. it is antisemitic to use accusations of antisemitism as a cover for carrying out genocide

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr your argument is on the level of some Holocaust deniers, that since the Germans were so super efficient and skillful, then they would have managed to kill all the Jews if that was their intention. That many survived is seen by them as proof that Nazi Germany did not commit a genocide.

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr well, Dresden was not a conclave controlled by the allies (the way Israel controlled Gaza), and the allies did not target the refugees fleeing the destruction.

Face it, the systematic destruction of hospitals, universities and, well, people fleeing is hard to not call a genocide unless you are a heartless apologist. Israel knows where everyone in Gaza lives and could have sent in special forces to take out Hamas and rescue hostages. But vengeance was the goal.

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr So then mass murder is the solution? The Israeli military estimate that maybe 10% of the killed were Hamas. If someone abducted people in Tel Aviv and fled into a mall, would the IDF bomb the mall? No, because some people are "better" than others.

Israel had the chance for peace after the Oslo accords but chose to create an enemy. Because it has a cadre of politicians from right-wing US immigrants with no connection to the Holocaust, destroying good-will.

Our investigation shows that its tablet operating system is an important gateway for businesses to reach consumers due to its large and commercially attractive user base and its importance for specific use cases.

We also discovered that Apple leverages its large ecosystem to disincentivise end users from switching to other tablet operating systems.

It is highly unlikely that anything which happens between now & November will prevent the former President of the United States from running again.

If you want to get worked up about things like the Supreme Court, or whether gag orders are being violated, or whether he spends time in jail, that's fine, but please don't let that distract you from what you could actually be doing between now & November to make sure that he never sets foot in the White House again.

November is all that matters.
