Ooo, I saw Alexis Hall's newsletter just in time to buy the new edition of Glitterland for $1.99. Sadly the sale expires in 50 minutes, so sorry I was not more on top of things.

? Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh which is very intriguing so far. Lots and lots of undercurrents, clueless main character.

? I very much enjoyed The Wonder Engine, the sequel to Clockwork Boys. Suspense, romance, humor, redemption!

I actually followed Ursula Vernon on the bird site because of her gardening posts long before I thought to read any of her books. Might be a lesson there... 😇

Been reading Forever My Girl by Heidi McLauchlin but giving up and deleting it because the MMC can't have a single thought about a woman that isn't misogynistic as hell. They all want him, they're all trying too hard, they all make him sick. He makes me sick.

? I was up all night 🥱 finishing You Should Be So Lucky. Amazingly, it's somehow not a letdown after the gorgeousness of We Could Be So Good.

The themes are around living an authentic life in a highly closeted time, and it's complex and believable. There are tropes too but not obnoxiously or pointlessly. And really well drawn, relatable characters. And pretty swoony romance too. 😂

@willaful I'm about 2/3 through "The Orc and Her Bride" by Lila Gwynn. I needed something relatively light, and it fits that bill. It's doing a whole "spoiled elf princess' parents betroth her to an orc princess who actually turns out to be a much better person" thing. Not the most original treatment, but it's decent enough.

I've "temporarily" put down "The Queer Girl Is Going To Be Okay" by Dale Wells. After ~1/4, I just couldn't get into it. I need to try again when I have more attention.

@willaful @romancelandia @romancebooks sounds cute! I'm listening to Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood and so far it's keeping my attention, which is not easy these days!

? Wow, the bleak moment in The Breakup Lists was even worse than I expected, though actually worked really well with the story arc. I found it overall a good read, though too repetitious and with a bit of a deus ex machina ending; I would've like to see the main character really pursue what he wanted.

Has what seems like very good representation, is very , and very geeky about high school theater. And a sweet romance.

? I The Breakup Lists by Adib Khorram (YA, theater kid, narrator is deaf) and have reached the part where I know exactly what is going to happen to screw up the romance and the anticipation is so painful I can barely read on.

? I haven't been posting about books much, been kind of in a meh mood. Still slowly reading Demon Copperhead, which is amazing but a LOT. Listened to Carrie Soto is Back, which was a bit of a hard sell because of the unlikable narrator but very enjoyable in the end. And just finished The Prisoner's Throne which I enjoyed but kind of forgot about as soon as I'd finished it.

@willaful @bookstodon I should finish City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky today…I don’t normally read very long books with ensemble casts but he won me over with the set-up and his sense of humour.

I am looking forward to finally finishing though, and this weekend will be Connie Willis’s The Road to Roswell — longtime fan, looking forward to it

Just finished The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson and am tempted to start a new category for my records: Nonfiction.Memoir.Bitching. If you'd love 400 pages of an old man yelling at clouds, to say nothing of being casually racist, homophobic and transphobic, this is the book for you. Not sure I'll ever be able to enjoy his work again. 😞

? I gave up on the audio of Take a Bow, Noah Mitchell, despite an excellent narrator with a delightful Australian accent. How can a "Shop Around the Corner" trope about online friends falling in love through musical theater be so desperately dull? Also all the bullying and loneliness was really painful to listen to.

Started Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher and how nice to be immediately caught up in a book again. Her voice is always so effective.

RomanceReviews,

@willaful @bookstodon YES!!! Her world-building is such a flex, too. "Oh, I have a billion more creepy and cool ideas, want one?"

Read Gay Poems for Red States, which is so powerful. What it's like to grow up in a place you both love and hate, which both loves and hates you. Finding a new place in the world while respecting the aspects of your childhood others sneer at; there are some wonderful poems about the linguistics and accents of Appalachia, and the way poor people take care of each other. I had so many feelings reading this.
