@chikorita157 You were right, looks like the Snapdragon X Elite (stop using X, it’s been swastikad) is both fast and lasts longer (though since it’s actively cooled and I have no idea of what battery was used we’ll have to see about performance per watt).

Would be neat to have it in a Linux laptop. I don’t want an even worse Windows keyboard (the win and menu key was always moronic and inferior to meta, but it’s getting worse now!) though, and Windows with copilot+ is just incredibly super creepy. So maybe someone will finally build an actual Linux laptop with a sensible and useful keyboard.

I don’t even want to know what it’s reporting back on, but nothing you do on your computer would be even remotely a little bit private. That is creepy.

Apple better not be as dumb.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 First of all, the M3 is really fast. Faster than what I need in a laptop, by far.

Also while we are going to see endless amounts of Benchmarks, the Apple SoCs vs others comes with the caveat that it’s only a part of it all. If you want MacOS/iOS/etc there are no alternatives. And if you want Windows/Android/(Linux?) you can’t use Apple SoCs anyways.

(I know they are working on Linux on Apple, but it’s not fully ready yet. Very impressed by their efforts, but I’m realistic.)

So Apple is mostly PR (faster means you need it, right?) plus a smaller number of people who do something intense. They have to appear good.

With non-Apple the question is, what happens to Intel/AMD? You know that story, but I myself see an open race still. Here you could jump hardware platform and continue your software (theoretically).

Biggest issue with jumping to ARM for handheld gaming systems that wants to perform really well is GPU. I still don’t get why AMD doesn’t have an ARM with their GPU in a SoC. Baffles me. Nvidia seems to have gone snowblind with AI:/

Feels like I’m looking at a bunch of puzzle pieces, but nobody seems to connect all needed pieces.

(I still don’t think x86->ARM will be fast enough unless we see hardware dedicated to it in non Apple hardware. And I think getting it recompiled is the way to go. But I could be wrong. If someone tries we’ll know:))

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 I’ve read that for a long time. Probably because it’s a “good story”. But at one point as you say pesky things like molecules comes into play.

Which is why we see multi-this and that. Multi cores, wide parallel pipelines, chiplets, etc.

That said, it seems like ARM is less resource intense for the same effect. Rethinking how the resources are used could create better outcomes.

But switching platforms is getting less and less common:( Feels like ARM might be the last one for a long time.

IMHO a lot of it is by far fast enough for me. My issues are power consumption and heat. I want less. It’s getting crazy in same cases. Not old big iron crazy, but still crazy.

I do wonder what it’ll all do to the whole business though. If the pace actually stops.

It's very strange how this anime season has one gay and 4 music lesbian series, and yet Japan still hasn't legalized same-sex marriages.

Literally a Japanese lesbian couple was granted refugee status in Canada in 2023 using a 200 page document about the discrimination they faced. https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/15271758

Looks like times are changing..?

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Just guessing here, but could it be related to the whole “don’t talk about things” culture? Which in many ways are a double edged sword.

Japan is definitely better than the U.S. right now, but I get the feeling that things move at a glacial pace. But I think it’s a great thing that it’s getting more common in media, as hopefully newer generations grow up with more empathy and tolerance.

It’s happened in the past with Mr Roger’s Neighborhood for instance.

Not that I’m seeking any of it out myself. Just as I’m not looking for cishet. I’m just not bothered by it and care more if it’s a good setting, world building, characters, and script.

I wonder if any of my favorite YouTubers have made any videos on the subject. It can be difficult to get much of an idea of it from the outside. I really wish Japan would take a leap forward and advance human rights. I think it would help overall.

@chikorita157 @NaraMoore Also doing DDG. Sometimes something new pops up, but it has gone bad pretty fast each time so in haven’t cared to fix anything.

Biggest issue with DDG is the obvious BS results you can run into. Like all of a sudden local results that aren’t at all relevant to me, but (geographically) local.

Just had one of those low level aha moments. I don’t have a TikTok account, I don’t have the app nor do I go to the web site.

So now I’m sure that if anyone is reading this they are thinking: “Yon, that’s an awfully long winded way to say you don’t watch any TikTok videos!”

Well, not true:) A crazy amount of TikToks are reposted as YouTube shorts.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I’m curious of how much it would cost to run video services. Seems like a very difficult thing to do. Privately, as a community, or as an organization.

Ever looked into fedi video services? More as in “Yon is curious”, not saying you should run it :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Bandwidth is pretty big too, scales with each user and as a small player one wouldn’t have access to <fancy tech that solves that, assuming I don’t have to explain it, but I also don’t know the word for it because I’m tired>.

Streaming is even worse in many ways. Short form videos would be the same.

(I don’t actually dislike short form, it’s just a very different thing. A different mind set. Much closer to zapping between channels but not as shit compared to watching curated “good” videos.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 CDN, that’s the dang word. I was thinking of how they are implemented and caching and couldn’t see the forrest for the trees:)

$600/year surely is a chunk of money, but not outside the real of what many can afford. But assume they don’t scale so, yeah, must be horrid amounts of money. Very difficult to get any of this to make any money.

Not to mention how much more difficult streaming is (not the Netflix kind, the Twitch kind). Lag is absolute killer for things like interacting with chat for instance. Very crazy.

Video is pretty crazy stuff. I grew up in an analog world:)

Nooooooooooo I got jury duty summons for 3 days after I get back from Japan :spyfam_anya_panic:

Can I just, like, share my social media with them ahead of time so they know I'm horribly opinionated and a terrible juror?

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Just wear a T shirt with Bernie and AoC on it and you won’t be chosen :)

I know the usual reaction is, no I don’t want to. Be it’s kinda scary that so much rides on juries.

Either way, good luck!

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Thing is, they have to choose someone or there would be no trials. I’m quite intrigued by the selection and what kind of people it is.

Jury trials are kinda scary.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee It’s kind of funny, I know more about the U.S. system than the Swedish one. But I was taught how the Swedish one works at school (no juries for instance), but virtually all my knowledge about how it works here comes from TV and movies.

I have a feeling that I don’t have a clear picture of the mundane reality. But as you say, at lot is low level stuff like tickets and such.

I must assume they want people that can sway. So I would probably be one of those people they chose, and one side heavily regrets it:)

I know that if I was a lawyer I’d ask “do you work with software, engineering, or science?” and chuck anyone that did :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings @neatchee “My internal compass is all that matters”:)

It’s funny how there are so many stories on how to get out of jury duty in the US, and back home it was about how to get out of military service :)

(I was placed, so I didn’t pull anything. But I requested to push it into the future as I was in college, and then they just didn’t want me anymore :))

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee @ami_angelwings Probably best to not do anything stupid, jokes aside. I’m sure one could get into trouble.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings @neatchee Same here:)

It’s like the “get out of military service” stories. Some involved chocolate (I’ll stop there), others declaring your love for communism (I.e. the Soviets), and all sorts of stuff. Pretty sure it was mostly tales :)

That said one of my favorite punk bands disbanded because the bassist refused military service and got jail time. Worked out ok because they reformed into another band without him, and I honestly think he was just waaaaay too left for it to be a good thing.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee @ami_angelwings Hehe. When I say too left I mean writing songs like “we will arm ourselves” (not a metaphor, it’s clearly weapons) or “shoot a cop” (much more direct than Cop Killer, which made people upset here).

Dude was a full blown revolution communist.

And they wrote (and covered) a bunch of songs that criticized the social democratic government. Yes a whole party that got something like 60-80% of the votes filled with Bernie Sanders and AoCs.

I miss when the left cared about worker rights and moving towards post scarcity. They have completely lost their ways and yeah. I’m sad.

But we could use some left here. It’s a dream but I’m hoping that R falls apart and D grows to the point it splits into progressives and conservatives and we can get some basic sanity.

I've been wondering for a while now... What's with young Chinese guys wearing Chicago Bulls basketball attire?

It's a thing that I randomly spot. The Bulls haven't been relevant for quite some years now. Is it that they're wearing comfortable clothing from that era? That basketball pop-culture in China is still stuck there and that these clothes are still being mass produced?

I wouldn't be surprised if people wore Slam Dunk or Kuroko's Basketball cosplay, but the Chicago Bulls..? I know that Chinese tourists still like to take the iconic photo at the railway junction near Kamakurakoukoumae station but I've seen these dudes all over the place.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe I can’t remember his name (don’t follow NBA, can’t name players in general), but maybe that famous Chinese player played in CB? Could explain it.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Probably some timing and marketing thing that caught on then. If you ever find out, post :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Exactly. Some things just kinda sticks. Like Fist of the North Star in some places. Or how “Chinese food” is different depending on the country you are in, and often not similar to food in China.

Or how you’ll hear people wax on about Ingemar Bergman and all I can think of is the grumpiest most depressing director of all time:)

They probably pushed CB when they entered the market and had some big players at the time.

Or how Caramelldansen is a big internet meme and the Japanese thought it was cool. But it was a done a dozen in Sweden and nobody cared too much. The lyrics aren’t great :)

Another new Xitter clone by an ex-Xitter exec, Maven, is basically using OpenAI to categorize posts, and using algorithms to generate a feed based on selected topics. So no 'following', just 100% topics based on algo...

In theory it's good, but it'll eventually just feed you mostly ads, because that's the only way to profit off social media. No following means all conversations would be topical instead of community, which is kinda like Deaddit.

https://www.wired.com/story/maven-social-network-that-eliminates-followers-and-stress/

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Isn’t there already a piece of software named Maven? Seems like poor naming, which isn’t a good start (always search any name you intend to use, even the big dogs fail at it. We almost got the Honda Fitta (that’s slang for female genitalia in Swedish and possibly more)).

I still think these kind of algorithms are neat, but only if I’m in charge of them myself. If AI can sort out ads, spam, abuse, fascism, etc I think it might just end up being good :)

@anianimalsmoe Whenever I see someone today name a company or a product something very common I think they are either foolish or IKEA. But IKEA does it on purpose for a reason.

(It’s the name of places, given names, or basic verb/adjective/nouns in Swedish. No need to trademark it then. Very safe. Examples being Kivik, Billy, and Blåhaj.)
