How to demonstrate to people the importance of privacy by showing the data collected about them?

I wish to convince my friends and family to avoid using privacy-invading ad-based services and apps. Seeing people discuss how much data these companies collect off of us, I want to know if there is a way you could get a sample of that data by yourself and show it to them for them to realize the gravity of the situation...

What are some commonly known facts that are too bizarre for you to believe to be true?

For me it is the fact that our blood contains iron. I earlier used to believe the word stood for some ‘organic element’ since I couldn’t accept we had metal flowing through our supposed carbon-based bodies, till I realized that is where the taste and smell of blood comes from.

zirzedolta,

I often used to look at it as a child, however the adults wouldn’t let me. I knew there was some ulterior motive behind it.

zirzedolta,

Interesting fact: the sun becomes 1 million tons lighter every second.

What’s even more fascinating is that most of the stars we see in the sky are afterimages of primitive stars that died out long ago yet they shine as bright as the stars alive today

zirzedolta,

I’ve seen this fact somewhere before, but I still am unable to grasp it in my mind

zirzedolta,

What would happen if you were to put both of yours legs in these westernmost and the easternmost parts?

zirzedolta,

Heard about it. I initially thought the universe should exist regardless whether someone is there to observe it or not…

…but then I also studied quantum mechanics, so I am not really in a position to say anything…

zirzedolta,

Blows my mind how this by its bare bones is just simple statistics and combinations but is a totally different story when described in English. I’m sure there are similar facts like this that are mathematically logical but to a layman is confusing and inconceivable.

zirzedolta,

I wish we could test this out with only simple apparatus. Unfortunately the common people do not have access to satellites or nonstop bullet trains.

zirzedolta,

I suppose it is for the best, but nonetheless I find it uncomfortable how our bodies have the ability to manipulate our brains’ memories and our consciousness residing in the same place cannot do anything about it

zirzedolta, (edited )

As a person who was born liking music, I indeed find it too bizarre to believe to be true.

zirzedolta,

May I ask what is special about cobalt in B12 specifically? I’ve come to realize there are numerous inorganic substances inside my body like copper, gold etc. so cobalt by itself doesn’t really stand out anymore.

zirzedolta,

I seem to have made a mistake then. Thank you for correcting it.

zirzedolta,

Interesting

Looking for games with unique core mechanics

I’m requesting for recommendations for games that stand out from the rest in their genre, and not in the sense of being the best game in that niche but actually bringing something new and innovative to the table. I’ve not had much experience in gaming, but I have a few games to give you a hint on what I am talking about:...

zirzedolta,

Lol I thought at first devs calculated exactly what portions of the apps need updating and uploaded only that much portion in the app stores. I dunno what to make of this discovery now.

What type of YouTube videos have high replay value and are worth downloading?

Seeing how there are official and unofficial options to download videos from YouTube, I wondered why downloading of videos was endorsed in the first place, I have downloaded videos in the past, but it was due to some project work. I haven’t really downloaded a video for entertainment, education or any personal reason at all. I...

How would you explain the need for three writing systems in Japanese to a person who only has had experience with one?

As an English speaking person who recently got into learning Japanese, I was intrigued by the use of the three writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana, however I could not truly understand why it is that way. I do know a bit about the history of these languages but that is not what I am interested in knowing; I wish to...

How to use ProtonMail in my Android phone without letting Google know about my Proton account?

I have been slowly degoogling my life by reducing my use of Google apps and switching to FOSS alternatives. I recently created a Proton account and tried to keep it completely isolated from my default Google account so as to not let it know what my Proton mail identity is. I have finished my transition in my desktop to the best...

zirzedolta,

I’m sorry, but I do not have the time, experience or knowledge to set up custom ROMs in my device at the moment.

zirzedolta,

I am just a casual person who takes privacy a bit more seriously than the general public. To be frank, I don’t even use Google services that much. I just wished to end my reliance on Google due to what I learned about their practices. However I can only go so far. I have a busy life and I do all these privacy related work during my free time. I don’t have a GrapheneOS compatible android phone, I don’t have the liberty to switch to a new phone, and I don’t have the knowledge to set up a custom ROM. I just want to take as many measures to increase my privacy without going to extreme measures like rooting my phone or setting up pihole.

I’ve tried to use alternatives from f-droid. switched to firefox (specifically mull), disabled unnecessary permissions and telemetry from Google apps etc. However, seeing all of the comments here suggesting actions that I am simply unable to take feels like all the other things I’ve done so far have been in vain and I should just succumb to Google’s spying, which I am feeling to do indeed especially after learning how much data Google has collected about me, making privacy in my phone virtually nonexistent.

zirzedolta,

I sincerely thank you for understanding my situation and giving me actually useful advice.
